Default 987 Center Console

What is everyone here doing with their chipped/scratched center console?

Option 1: Get a new factory replacement ($900) - it will scratch again
Option 2: Get a Bumperplugs painted replacement ($850, plus returning the core) - will likely also need PPF to prevent damage ($$$)
Option 3: Get a leather covered console ($1800, plus returning the core) - too expensive

I'm debating between option 1 & 2. I'm not sure if Porsche have updated the soft touch material so they're more durable than the ones from 10+ years ago. I will try to talk to my detailer next week to get a quote on the PPF as it is likely difficult & expensive to do due to its odd shape.

Option 2 won’t need the PPF to keep it protected unless you’re throwing the keys on it and or using the car to haul stuff. It’s fairly resilient to bumps/and minor impacts. At least the OEM version and I suspect the Bumper Plugs is equally as good.

I went with one from DB Carbon for around $950 with no core required. I considered another factory plastic one for $750 from Sunsetporscheparts (I think that's how much it was when I looked last). The leather option was cool, but looks very similar in photos to the plastic and even in person it has a premium feel, but not $2k premium, to me.

Also agree that PPF should not be needed on the Bumper Plugs one. Painted consoles seem to hold up relatively well.

I'm saving up for this one which shouldn't scratch - https://tequipment-finder.porsche.co...257981004B1D37

Pricey though...

I got lucky and a fellow inmate listed one for $200 (with the ashtray!) and it was a 9.5 /10 on pristine-ness. I don't have a clue how it was kept in such perfect shape, but I'm not complaining.

Beforehand I was contemplating having my scratched up one hydro-dipped. Looked like an interesting option

Before

After

My cost was $600 installed. A semi-local shop in NJ did it for me - a quick swap out. He had the painted one ready for installation, he installed it and kept the original one as a core for another painted console. If you're interested in the shop - PM me and I'll try to dig up contact info. The paint quality is excellent and matches my Cararra White exterior perfectly. Mine wasn't particularly scratched up - I just wanted to lighten up the interior and to me - the body-color painted one is a classy update.

I did add a small square of static-clin PPF behind where the buckles are. They do have felt on the back of them from the factory - but even so - I wanted a bit of protection from them. The rest of the paint is just as good as the exterior paint because that's what he used.

I think the factory painted console comes with PPF where the seatbelt buckles are... unless I'm missing something the bumperplugs painted console do not come with these...

$90 for $1 of PPF is simply amazing. This is on the DIY scale of 1-10, about a 0. Cut it out, stick it on. You can buy small sheets or stop by a place doing PPF and ask for some scraps. The only tools required are perhaps a straight-edge and a pair of scissors.

Why does it cost $1800 plus core return to cover a small center console with leather? Hard to believe this can be done at only one place in the US.

Not arguing about the price, I was just pointing out that even the factory piece has PPF to prevent scratches.

I wasn't questioning on the quality of the paint. But paint is paint and it will eventually chip & scratch if one is not careful.

On a somewhat related note, has anyone been successful repainting or vinyling perhaps the dash area around the stereo & climate controls. I think the grey plastic there on the 987.1 looks quite cheap, and it would be nice to upgrade that in some way. (I have replaced the grey trim strips on the dash with the shiny silver version already). (Thanks)

I have the factory option painted center console.

I love how it pops when the roof is down, as it color matches the exterior paint, along with the painted-back sport seats.

I specifically went for the painted console option back when I got the car, and prefer it over the stock plastic, and the leathered option. It has held up great and was worth it!

The local detailer can do PPF on the painted console in 3 pieces for $60.

Seems you could buy 2-3oz premium quality English bridle leather in black, a can of contact cement, and a razor knife for $30-40.
If you were crafty and brave...
