Question 987.1 and 987.2 Transmission Compatibility?

Hey guys, I was wondering if there's any transmission compatibility between the two models. Scenario would be swapping out a PDK transmission in a 2009 Cayman S and installing the 6sp manual transmission from a 2006 Cayman S. I looked up the part numbers and they are different, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're not compatible. I know that the gearing is the same across all 987 model years, so I feel like maybe this would work.

Thanks in advance for any knowledge!

No, because of the engine change. The bellhousung bolt pattern changed. You must get a 6spd the same generation as your car.

Or you could install one of my sequential conversions.

I read somewhere that 987 transmissions were manufactured by VW. Any truth to that?

Technically, doesn't VW manufacture..... Well, all of Porsche?
Sorry, couldn't resist. But you know what I mean. Having a part on your Porsche being manufactured in a plant owned by VW isn't exactly odd. Or at least it isn't to me.

I remember a post from BGB stating that it was originally an Audi unit. At least the .2 one anyway.

The 6-speed is made by Getrag (now part of Magna). They are an independent transmission supplier to many companies including Porsche, Audi, and VW. I don't know about the older 5-speed.

Correct, and the case has "Getrag" cast into it, in case there's any confusion! I believe the five-speed is a VW 012-series transmission.

Turns out the 5-speed is a Getrag G87/01.

It’s my understanding the 6 speeds are Getrag units as noted above to be originally used for Audi diesel applications. Probably why I have never heard of one failing.

The 987.1 6-speed manual is a Getrag G87/21 (Cayman) and G87/20 (Boxster)

The 987.2 6-speed manual is a Getrag G87/40 (Cayman and Boxster)

Both generations share gearbox with Audi. They are NOT compatible. It is well known in racing applications that the 987.2 transmission (also used in 981) are extremely robust, able to handle 24-hour endurance racing... just talk with someone that actually raced them like BGB or Guard Transmission. They were designed for Audi 2.7L turbo diesel and BGB said the most robust transmission they've ever used. 987.2 would last 8-10x as long in track usage as the 987.1 transmissions. The .1 trans is not very reliable, even when upgraded.
