Default 987 forum poll

How is it the unique 987 Boxster, Cayman, and Spyder get lumped into a forum with different model. From what I understand the 981 is a ground up revamp or redesign of the 987.2.
I'm new here but it looks to me that the differences are greater than the similarities. Just wondering if such a forum is justified. Maybe it's just the 981 that needs a ride. In which case let it go hang out with the 718! lol

Many have complained about this in the past and it has fallen on deaf ears. It’s especially frustrating when someone posts a question and fails to include model information, then you’re left guessing if it’s a 987 or 981. I really don’t know why Rennlist decided to lump them together, probably because they just don’t place the same value on them as the 911 models which each get their own section with every model and configuration.

I decided not to put a poll up because -
I can see where it would be impossible to fix the problem now that all the discussion and information has been lumped together for so long.
It's a shame really. A missed opportunity for a better forum.

Some head to head model comparison:

Yeah, it's stupid. This forum is also borderline unusable on mobile with all the ads too.

Interesting topic. I have advocated a complete restructuring of all the boxster/cayman forums. Besides this combined forum - we do have a 986 boxter forum, and a separate "cayman" forum. There is no logic to how the structure is laid out.

A number of years ago - I did put the Cayenne forums on a more logical basis - take a look at - https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-cayenne-248/ It took MANY hours to move things to the correct place, and at the time we only had 2 model (955/957 and 958) to sort out. Putting it in this form made it super simple to create the forum 9Y0 when the most recent Cayenne was released.

I would love to do this with this forum - but as noted - it would be a huge job to go back and sort out all the threads into a logical structure since each thread would have to be reviewed to see what model/series it refers to..

I agree that the current layout really limits the sense of community and limits participation - but it's hard to say how to fix that. I often find more info more easily on Planet-9's 987 forum.

There are some plans for some rearrangement forthcoming, but I haven't been involved.

Don I know many of us appreciate your efforts finally giving this forum some much needed love. IMHO it’s been largely ignored and it shows.

Personally I think all 987’s should be lumped together, all 981’s should be lumped together and the 718’s lumped together. That includes Cayman and Boxster lumped into a single place. It’s easy enough to establish if one has a sunroof or a fabric top .

I agree - all under the heading of Boxster/Cayman - like the Cayenne forum is. I would love to see that - but wouldn't want to have to do the sorting out. Maybe when winter comes and it's cold and snowy out..

Be sort of:
CAR MODELS - main forum, in this case Boxster/Cayenne
  • 986 Boxster
  • 987 Boxster/Cayman
    • Variants - GT2, Spider, etc.
  • 981 Boxster/Cayman
    • Variants - GT2, Spider, etc.
  • 718 Boxster/Cayman
    • Variants - GT2, Spider, etc.
I'll pass this thread along to management.

I agree 100% on the organization needs to increase usefulness! I also want to give Don many thanks for sorting out the Cayenne forum ( splitting one mess into 3 useful forums!!).

I would volunteer in helping sort these, I'm sure a bunch of us wouldn't mind helping... Also you can just make the change going forwards.

I’ve said the same. It’s obvious that the lowly mid engine cars were an afterthought when the forum was created.
I recently noticed that rennlist is owned by a mega corporation “internet brands” so if reorganization is left entirely to unpaid moderators, I can see why it never gets done. No idea on the history there, just noticing that planet 9 seems to have a different vibe and many users here cross post there for some reason.

Agreed, make a dozen or so temporary mods and just let us have at it. Sure, some trust is involved, but you gotta get it done somehow. Even starting the new org now and letting the old threads default to one new subforum or another unorganized is better than how it is currently. At least it would be properly organized moving forward.

I believe the temp mods can be restricted to one section or forum. Let me know if I can help

I have run other car forums (and I'm a librarian) so I would volunteer to sort threads, if needed.

I'd make one change:
  • 982 718 Boxster/Cayman
    • Variants - GT4, Spider, etc.
Because there's going to be a 98X 718 Boxster/Cayman generation next. (Is it 983?)
