Anyone tracking their 981 ?
I'm selling the race car and trailer etc and going back to DE and Track days. While I decide what car to buy for the purpose I was considering tracking my 981 GTS. Anyone tracking thier 981? Any issues, overheating - oil or PDK ? I won't be tracking it extensively but would like to use it while I shop. Could see 4-5 track days.
Thanks
Jeff

Burning Brakes
Took my 981 GTS to 3 DE track days. These were full days with 20 mins driving and 40 mins waiting (PCA event with 3 skill levels). No problems with anything except getting 9 mpg :P Just refill at lunch break and good to go. About an hour commute to and from track.

Track Day
I have a base Cayman and in 9 months have 8 DE days (4 weekends). Drove the car to each of the tracks and back home afterward. No problems, but I have just graduated out of Green to Blue, so I am not driving as hard at this point. Car has been fine temperature and brake wise.

Have just completed 58 track days on my 2015 GTS with PDK.
No problem with overheating ( even on days above 100F).
Just upgrade to better than stock brake pads and fluid and your good to go.
Increased camber will help with tire wear.....

My base Cayman has been an awesome track car going into its fourth season now. You will want to change the oil every couple of events, upgrade brake fluid and pads, and expect to replace rotors on a regular basis. Until I upgraded my rotors with two piece slotted girodisks I was consuming the stock drilled rotors after three events.
The engines don't have any overheating or oil supply issues, and I think the GTS has a third radiator? The only issue I've had is the need to replace one pencil coil, possibly due to heat damage after insufficient cool down lap time on a hot day. Or it may have just been a weak part. There have been some reported issues with older PDK units subjected to hard track usage, but they seem to be relatively rare. Don't know if adding a trans cooler is recommended or not. My manual has done very well. I do change its oil every six events.

I use Performance friction 08 pads and have been running NT01s on 18" rims. Just purchased a set of RE-71Rs to try. Depending on your rim size, the RE-71s might be a good option. They have plenty of tread for street use, whereas the nittos are pretty bare after a couple of events (the nittos are great track tires though).

Track Day
I use the OEM pads and had a set of RE71Rs which last 6 track days and about 5000 street miles. Putting on a set of Pirelli PZero PZ4 tomorrow based on the dealer service recommendation. I will see. I really liked the RE71Rs but they went quickly. Based on the other comments, I am at beginner level on the track, so I wonder how long they would last with someone driving harder.
By the way, I have a manual transmission which I forgot to mention earlier.

I bounce between Nitto NT-01's and RE-71R's. The nittos are cheaper ( if you ht the ebay sales on them) and last longer than the RE-71R's. The RE-71R's might be a little bit stickier and definently quieter ( nitto's humm on the street).
I use Pagid yellow pads, last a long time and also allow the rotors to last a long time too. Averaging about 25 track days per front rotor and 15 or so days on the front pads. Run in the advanced group.

I've got 42 track days on my Cayman S. Never had an overheating issue. It has been a fantastic track car. I used to track it a lot, then retired it while I was tracking my GT3; now actively tracking it again. Consumables all depend on your pace. OEM pads and rotors used to last a long time when I started. Now, not so much. I run the 991s calipers in front and I only got 6-8 days out of the front OEM rotors this time around so I'm going back to Girodisk. I have been running Pagid yellows which are fine, but I'm moving to RE10 pads now that Girodisk has a 991s rotor that can accomodate stock GT3 size pads (I just found out about this). Been using the RE71r tires (245/35/19; 285/35/19) which have been great but I only got about three track days from the last set. Going to try Hoosiers (235/295) for my next few events. With a DSC controller and GT3 sway bars my pace is about 3 seconds off my GT3 times. The Hoosiers will narrow that gap even farther. Shaving those last few seconds is expensive!

I've been running 18" wheels with NT01's. I bought the wheels used off a guy that ran them on his CR.
Just upgraded the PASM with the DSC module, made a big difference in breaking, no more wiggles. For brakes I was running Pagid yellow's, but tried Ferodo pads this time around. I like them so far and the pedal stays consistent. The Pagids would get a soft pedal, which was the same experience I had with my 997.

I am using the 350 Giro rotors on my 981S with the 991 calipers and the GT3 size pads in front. In the rear I am using 350 rotors with 996 T calipers. The Giro rotors have been incredible! Over 3400 track miles with only a hint of surface crazing. I run in the black group. FWIW
