Default DE, 981

This weekend I took the car out for its first DE. The car ran pretty well, but with stock setup (alignment) and OEM tires, it understeers like a ****. Brakes faded fairly quickly too (incidentally I noticed that not all of the cross-drill holes in the front rotors go all the way through the rotor, interesting).

I learned you really need to keep the revs up, and if you do, you're rewarded with some pretty good acceleration.

Next to get an alignment and upgraded brake fluid...

I have 19" Goodyear F1s on my 981.

During a recent 2400 mile jaunt across the Alps, the Goodyears performed poorly under sharp cornering, squealing and sort of roaring.

They gave me no confidence at all.

As soon MPSS comes out in N rated in my sizes, I am changing.

I drove the 981 hard in the mountains, mostly in 2nd and 3rd with much time in the upper rev ranges .. the power is truly sensational. More than plenty on the curvy roads, and ample on the straights.

Phenomenal engine. Even sounds air cooled.

My 981 with 19" came with Pirelli P-Zero's. Haven't pushed them real hard, but felt pretty good on my last trip up the mountain in NC.

I am surprised that you got brake fade. Which track is this?

This may be a stupid question, but what makes you think this?

@Khooni, High Plains Raceway. I think the main straight is almost 1/2 mile long. If you're familiar w/ the track, I ran a 2:07 fast lap, which is pretty good considering street tires (I don't like the Pirellis) and very understeery street alignment; point being I push the car. Better brake fluid will go a long way.

@the_vetman, I originally thought I had brake material build-up in some of the holes, and when I went later to scrape it out w/ a screwdriver, I found that they weren't obstructed after all. They were only basically dimples partly-drilled into the rotor.

He's running street pads and fluid, of course they are going to fade! You need to run pads and fluid suited to track use - the stock stuff will almost never be sufficient.

I'm running 19's on Pirellis. Zero tire squeal and reasonably neutral handling. I'm pretty sensitive to this as my 997s had quite a bit of understeer and the tires ( p-zeros) made a ton of noise. The 981 is a huge improvement in those two areas.

Took the car to Chris Cervelli yesterday to have the car realigned. Was able to get -1.5 up front and -1.75 rear. Front negative is an improvement over previous years; could only get about -1 without going to adjustable control arms. Now to get it back out on track!

-1.5 up front is a nice improvement from the 987 limit of -1.0

Do the Spyders have the GT3 arms standard?

I guess one other thing to note is that the "before" settings were uneven from the factory (presumably, it's slightly possible that they moved after I received the car, but not likely). There was almost a quarter-degree difference in camber from left to right both front and rear; driver front had less and passenger rear had less. Makes for less-than-ideal handling!
