Question After Market Camera Install Question

For those of you who routed an aftermarket rear camera to a JoyeAuto/Isudar/Mr12Volt unit, how did you run the wire through the bumper into the trunk?

Im curious as well. It’s surprisingly hard to find good info/guides on this for the 981.

I ended up with the Mr 12volt box stashed in the drivers side footwell.

I ran the wire into the bumper through the license plate light hole. Worked well. I used the left light because the camera wire is short and that's the side my camera wire comes out of my frame.

There's a very active thread and the aftermarket head units in the 997 forum.

Here's a few videos:

As I recall, I drilled a hole tight above the license plate for the camera to mount to. Removed the right tail light. There is a gap within that cavity where you can get a "fish" wire in with a reasonably direct path to the hole drilled for the camera. Poke the fish wire through, & attach the the end of the camera wire to it. Gently pull until the camera wire is in the cavity.

I just bought the JoyeAuto CarPlay kit for my CDR 3.1 but have not yet installed it. I wanted to install a backup camera and maybe a front camera but did not want to do any drilling for the cameras. I plan to use one of the cameras that just replaces one of the tag lights so it just snaps in. It has its own LED built in. I had one of those installed on my 350Z and loved it. Camera resolution is as good as my wife's Subaru or my Bronco Sport and they are fairly cheap. To attach the front camera, I planned to use the 3M Dual Lock tape. That stuff is awesome and much stronger than Velcro or double sided tape..

Cardialflyer, did you use a grommet plug for the wire to seal the drilled hole is is that unnecessary?

Here's a thread that may be helpful. I removed both my front and rear bumpers to install the cameras so they look OE. There are pictures of them in the linked thread.

This is what I did also. It will work with the license plate light location also.

Thanks for all the replies with links! Helpful aggregation of information.

I am planning to use a cam that snaps in to replace one of the license plate lights. I’d like to avoid drilling it possible.

That's the route I went (camera that replaces a license plate light). Link to the one I bought (there are a few different options; I picked the one with no LEDs on the camera itself, but they sent me the one with them anyway). It Works great, no drilling (the wire can be routed behind the right taillight as mentioned above). The only minor downside is the color temperature is slightly different between the original light and then light attached to the camera.

No. Not necessary. That area behind the bumper is generally exposed to the elements anyway.
