Track Day cut short Cayman AOS
Hi All,
The AOS (air oil seperater) on my 2014 Cayman S died after the third track day session yesterday. I had noticed a squeeking noise after getting off track a then a huge poof of smoke came from the exhaust. I had the car towed to my house. Is there a better AOS for the Cayman's than the factory OEM version? It looks like the motorsport version is 9X as expensive and has the same rubber diaphragm that seems to be the failure point.
It looks like it's easy to replace on the 3.4 engine.
On another note, what a car on track. I cut my all time track record by 2 seconds from my 2010 M5. Unfortunately I had to take the M5 to the track today since the Cayman is down.

After doing a little googling, it looks like the motorsport isn't much or at all better than the standard one, so ordered the Porsche one from FC Euro with lifetime warranty.
here is one of my Laps at Mid Ohio on Saturday, what a car

Thanks for the info! i hope the car get back to the track soon.
Nice lap. What device did you use to get the throttle position data? I plugged AIM Solo DL II to the ODBII and didn't get it out of my 2014 981.
Thank you!

I was able to get the replacement AOS in on Saturday Morning, runs like a top now. I had to remove front and top engine panels to get to it. I'm planning to get back on track at the end of September. I'm getting an error on the front right inner park sensor after I completed the job, and i'm wondering if I bumped something in the process.

I previously owned a 987V2 Boxster and replaced the AOS, a somewhat simple task. Pulling out of the garage this morning and thought I saw a familiar smoke plume. Everything on the 987V2 was accessible from the front/top of the engine, for a novice DYI like me, sounds like that isn't the case with a '14 981 Cayman S. I remember something about they fail around 50K miles, I'm at 58K. Did you find a video out there and will this require a Car Lift. Thanks

Perhaps I jumped the gun on posting the last reply, the Front and Top engine panels seemed foreign to me but thinking about it, yes, the easy to remove aluminum panels. The 987V2 added the challenge of no room with the roof in the service mode. Any tips for me. Thanks

Finally took the bad AOS apart and it had a whole in the membrane. This would be a simpler job if you pry this piece off and just replace the membrane.

Whoa.
I don't see the AOS in the Maintenance Interval doc I use.
Maybe one of those items you replace just because you're in there.
Does anybody have any suggestions on an AOS replacement interval? Say for "street" and "track"..
In the years I've owned and worked on my Cayman, have yet to pull the top cover. Maybe this is reason enough.
