I have a 981 GT4 which I replaced the PCM 3.1 w/ the PCM 4. Did the cluster flash, etc. and everything is working well except the map in the cluster. I just got a 718 GT 4 cluster, and everything works well w/ the car and PCM 4. Also new LVDS cable PCM4 to cluster.
I need to code the 718 cluster to allow the map to be displayed (because the option doesn't show in the cluster menu). I used PIWIS 2 to do all the prior coding w/ the 981 cluster and PCM 4. Having installed the 718 cluster and by using PIWIS 2, I get "Control unit variant instrument cluster in MCR not found". I am assuming I am getting this error because the 718 cluster is built in 2020 and PIWIS 2 is for units up to 2018. Is this assumption correct? I am waiting for the PIWIS 3 to arrive soon.
Also is it possible to code the car's VIN into this 718 cluster?
Hello, as far as I remember the vin can be coded under additional information. But I am not shure if the cluster must have below 1000km for this setting.
1) You will need to order this cable from the Porsche dealer (this is a specific Porsche part) 9P3-979-001. The 981 connector wouldn't plug into the PCM 4 (if I remember correctly). The part noted above has the required 90 degree bend that attaches to the PCM 4. This allows the unit to go all the way back (using a straight cable - will interfere w/ the frame of the car).
2) I would definitely not modify the cable. Just order the correct cable from the dealer.
3) Assuming you are using the 9P3-979-001 cable (compatible w/ PCM 4), the cable (Green) end common to the 981 cluster plugs in no problem, but you get no map video signal as others said in prior posts.
4) I purchased a (almost brand new) 718 GT4 cluster to see if the map will be displayed, but the Menu Scope in the cluster doesn't have the map option - so it needs to be programed into the cluster. I have PIWIS 2 which cannot program this model year 2020 cluster thus I am waiting for my PIWIS 3 tester to show up.

will order. Do you know if you can change the cayman logo to cayman s? I have a PIWIS 3. Hopefully it will work to program my cluster. Currently install nav zen with match am. Then speakers.
on pcm my cluster is oem and my car is 981s. But the pcm shows just cayman. So I got the match 10up amp and nav tv z working. So getting sound via optical cable. The pcm now shows Burmester which is funny since it came from a car with Bose. I can access Burmester settings so for those who have Bose there is an option. I will be ordering the cable for the cluster this week.
On the PIWIS 3 which might be same as PIWIS 2, look for Fahzeaugvariante (its only value passed the "E" listing). You need to be in engineering mode to change this.
Will you use a 718 cluster if the the 981 will not display the maps? Note that the LVDS cable only sends the NAV signal to the cluster nothing else.
BTW on my GT4 I didint have a Bose system (the car at the time only came w/ the STD PCM3.1), so I used the setup as shown below and it sounds really good w/ the stock speakers.
-If the car is 981 and cluster is OEM and you currently using PCM 3.1 - please don't order the LVDS cable from the prior post. That is intended for a retrofitted PCM4 to the cluster.
-If your PCM 3.1 is showing the wrong model, then it must be somewhere in the head unit programing in PIWIS (engineering mode - I think, Maybe there is a code called Fahreugvariante under the PCM control unit). I changed the model logo on the PCM 4 w/ the mib toolbox (via the GEM).
-If your 981 cluster shows the wrong model, code as per the previous post.
