Default How rare is an x73 on a 981 boxster?

My '13 boxster has the x73 setup. Can't recall when x73 gave way to PASM on the boxster. Was curious if there's any way to quantify how many/few boxsters made their way to the US before the switch. Love my setup and wondering how rare it is.

It's not that X73 gave way to PASM, per se. There were three options: standard suspension, PASM, and X73.

My 981 Boxster GTS, for example, has X73. The 981 GTS cars had PASM standard. X73 was a no cost option.

So just because a 981 does not have PASM does not mean it has X73. Not saying yours doesn't; I'm sure it does. But didn't want someone to read this thread and think they have X73 just because they don't have PASM.

It's easy to tell. Was the car purchased in the men's section or the woman & children section?

When I used the phrase "gave way to," I was just trying to simplify what I understand occurred -- X73 was phased out over time in the US both because it wasn't a huge seller and because Porsche wanted to focus on PASM. My car has it and I love it. One of the reasons I will always hold onto it. Just trying to figure out how many sister cars may exist and how having that setup may impact values down the road.

My guess on how many have it? Not many. I might even call X73 somewhat rare.

As for impact on value down the road? Eh. Probably negligible.

There are somewhat uncommon with few and far between now. If I was looking I’d snap one up if the spec was close to what you’re looking for.

Ultimately the 718 ended X73 for MY17 and on. And I can only believe it was purely a cost savings decision for Porsche. X73 also was the most expensive suspension option as it not only included unique dampers and springs, but also beefier ARBs. You can blame its lack of popularity mostly on dealers spec'ing predominantly PDK cars with options to keep the cars moderately priced. Base models were usually bare boned, and S models may include Bose, sat/nav, perhaps full leather, SC, PTV, and maybe a wheel upgrade. Rarely would you see X73 and/or PCCB unless someone ordered it. The discerning customer is the rarest of all.

Over the decades there are some generalities which hold true often enough. I usually see women customers in base Boxsters, mature men in base Carreras, and posers in turbos. I belong to the middle group, so I can rag on my own. But I've never owned a base model, although the Carrera T appeals to me, and base models with PCCB always seem cool.

I drove a manual Carrera T and a manual 718 Boxster GTS back-to-back yesterday. The second time I've driven a manual Carrera T. The other time was at PEC Atl last month. Further solidified my opinion that a manual Carrera T is my favorite Porsche. Heresy if seen by the wrong folks, but the 991.2 T reminds me so much of the 997 GT3.

Also worth noting that X73 can be installed after the fact for around $2500. So that would provide an upper limit on increased value.

Wholesale on Ohlins R/T is 2550, retail is 2900 - parts only - FWIW. Much stiffer and IMO better shocks but:
a.) not oem
b.) Doesn't include Sway bars and other beefier components
c.) X73 is much more comfortable

Just sharing as a point of reference. I don't think its an apples to apples but some may cross shop.

I have X73 on my 981 Boxster S. Added it by buying the kit from Suncoast and having a local Porsche dealer do the install. Don't think it is really rare on 981 cars. If you check used car ads in Panorama, here on RL, or on the Porscheusa.com website, you'll see it pops fairly often. PASM is more common than X73, but the base suspension is more common than both. The GTS cars came standard with PASM but X73 was a no-cost change if building a GTS from scratch, IIRC. It's not a complicated retrofit, just lots of parts to handle and big bolts/nuts in several places. Front subframe has to be completely dropped from the car to get the front anti-roll bar swapped. It was the single most effective bang-for-buck mod I did to my car for smiles-per-dollar, with the retrofit of PSE to my car being second best mod.

Very rare on the 981 Cayman searches I have been doing for several months.... it's such a shame that such a low cost and great option was left out on so many cars. Just looks alone it should have been an easy choice for a top option.

Just curious if you remember what the total cost with install was?

i was quoted $1000 for install from Mod Bragians

I bought an X73 suspension in near-new condition off a fellow on Planet-9. He had just replaced it with some fancy aftermarket setup. $600. There are a couple YouTube vids out there and between them and maybe a beer or two for inspiration, I replaced the ''standard' suspension in my base 981 Cayman with X73 in about 4 hours. Then took it to my dealer to have them check my work and do an alignment...which was $450.

X73 is AMAZING. If you find a car with it...buy it.
