Default Best place for a re-manufactured starter?

So noticed my starter cranked a little slow on Sunday, cranked fine on monday AM, then this afternoon, cranked fine, then slowed down, then nothing.

Loud click when I engage, battery showed 12v on meter, tried to jump, nothing. Pushed to the hill, rolled down and started fine.

Other than a bad wire, I have a feeling the starter died.

Where is the best place to get a re manufactured?

$185 plus core is the cheapest I have found so far, that includes shipping.

Thanks!

I just replaced mine over the winter and your price seems good. Bring some electrical tape when you do the job as you may find your wire wrap needing some help. Apparently this is a common issue. Pretty straight-forward job.

Thats the same price I paid for mine. Very easy job and fixed all sorts of weird sounds and issues when trying to start the car!

Have you considered a Porsche remanufactured starter? They seem to work well and might be cheaper.

I was under the impression BOSCH was OEM, when I looked at my usual OE places, I was seeing prices as high as $500. Median seemed to be around $280.

So I didn't bother to call suncoast or sunset, my usual go to places, when I can't find online.

Can you even get these new/re-man from Porsche still?

EDIT: Just called a discount P dealer, Re-Manufactured, $745.95 + S&H that includes a ~270 dollar core, already forgot that price

I'd be sure to test the battery first, and check the rest of the electrical system before assuming the starter crapped out. They are fairly robust, no?

Thanks, I did a charge on it, tested it at autozone, passed.

Problem I have is now getting the car up, too low to fit on ramps, (I have CS springs)

Jacked it up and put ramps under that way, but the 6.5" lift was only enough to fit my head, not work. I have stands, never trust those, and not sure on the 968 if it is much different than the 944 to jack it up.

The main frame front to rear already has a dent from someone jacking it there.

I have a lower brace on the a-arm.

Car has 150k on it now, and I have records back to 80k showing no starter change.

Car runs fine push starting it. Whacking it with a hammer gently did nothing It is probably the solenoid that failed. As the starter turned for a bit, and got slower, then nothing.

But I agree, taking a chance on the starter, more experience than concreted proof at this point tells me the starter

Thanks Paul for the thread, pretty much sounds like my issue, one loud click and nothing.

I found some ramps that get me up to 10" lift, hopefully enough to wiggle my fat self under there

I miss the skinny days!

I don't care what the sticker on the new one says, my old one has no sticker and whacking with a hammer has saved me a few times in the past

I put the front end up on Rhino ramps and could barely squeeze underneath. Good luck!

Time to justify a portable car lift?

That is what I had, not sure how you did it, Blitz Rhino ramps, 6.5 inches lift.

I do wonder, being that mine are like 14 years old, does the plastic expire on these?
