Default I told you!!! The $100K 968 is here...

I heard about this car a few weeks back. A guy picked it up at an estate sale in Texas for only $5K. He didn't know what it was but figured how could he go wrong. Got it started and drove it away with the original timing belt. Hadn't been started in years. Not sure how many flippers it has been through but the current one has it listed for a cool $100K. I hope he gets it!

I haven't seen any perfect low mileage cars sell north of 25k lately. These cars need to be driven and a car like Don H's had been driven something like 800 miles a year with annual maintenance and still sold for 1/4 of this guy's asking price.

At 100k I'd at least expect to be getting a resevoir full of windshield washer fluid (and not the cheap stuff, the nice blue stuff at that) and a temperature gauge that is operational! If you have no clue of what I'm saying take a look closely at the pic of the instrument gauge! ;-)

Best,

Calguy

I know my car has lots and lots of miles, but I would take it over this car full with three hot women and a bag of cash in the back in the back. It would drive about the same, but be a lot more fun!

Two things with this 968 just from the photo's }

A ) The coolant temp gauge is broken , in the instrument photo the engine is running at idle , but the temp needle is in a very odd position

B ) This car has cup I wheels , these were an option in 1992 & 1993 , but this is meant to be a 1994 year type , so it should have cup II wheels ( 94 & 95 )

Yes on the gauge - no on the wheels. Jeff can confirm but this appears to be an option 718 car which means that it was a leftover 1993. This is why it has '93 wheels along with '93 front and rear seats. It started life as a 1993.

While I appreciate Jeff's optimism on the selling price, and I'm tired of hearing that NICE 968s are still worth nothing, I think this guy is dreaming.

Very good Cliff! You get a star for the day! This is a very early 1994 (RS820075) and a 718 car meaning it was originally built as a 1993 and reVINed by Porsche to be a 1994. Besides partial leather, the 17" Cup1s are original to this car (option code 403).

It's called 'throw up a number and see if it sticks. Who knows maybe some astronaut just back after 40 years on Mars will think it's a steal.

Spend a hundred grand to get a 20 year-old car which needs to be driven that's never been driven, to then either keep never driving it to "retain" its value or drive it and loose 75% of the purchase price in a year?

I can print the picture of that car for free and still get a better value than a buyer at that price. All while driving my red '94 cabrio with 90K+ on the clock, having a blast.

Jeff,

Makes me feel like my all original 43K mile 968 already went up in value and I just got it!

JC,

thanks for posting.

that's how much it costs to bring any 968 up to proper sports car/minimal supercar spec anyway.

whether you do it with a maintenance-hog Porsche T motor, or (other high entrance fee) LSx swap, then update the transmission, suspension, wheels, improve brakes, cooling system, etc.... recover the vinyl with leather, dump the garbage steering wheel, improve to proper seats, and a decent stereo etc,

by the time you do those things.... and then add a re-spray, you're right there.... and maybe more.

and I think a good running 968 that hauls *** is worth all the effort (full speed ahead).

still, I hope he gets something close to his asking price for this car (which would benefit nicely from a few upgrades).

CS steering wheel, seats, leather dash/doors/console, brakes, decent stereo, etc...

the ad will be gone of Craigslist soon, so.....

My wife was perusing through the CL ads and saw this. Mine is advertised for $11.5k, and she said; 'hey! we really need to raise our price'. I looked at the ad, and had a good laugh. If it sells with actual odo written in I would be surprised. I'm betting it's sold TMU.

Thats amazing about the option 718 , so this 968 was originally a 1993 year type( 1993 wheels , interior ,whole car in fact with a 1993 Vin ) , then was it PCNA that changed the Vin to make it a 1994 year type ? or was it Porsche Germany that decided to hide the actual year type ?

Sounds like fraud , or deception on the actual year type

What about the engine number ? , it would show that it has a 1993 year type engine , because that would not have been changed ( that I can be sure on )

There is no mention of a M 718 on the PET , no wonder , an option that the owner can have a different Vin number to make the appear a year younger ( Yikes )
