Default Anybody know this car? Black on black '94 six speed coupe in New England

Just ran across this black on black coupe for sale in New England. Looks to be well maintained, but I haven't seen it up close yet. Approx 80K miles. Looks to be stock with 16" OEM wheels.

I can provide or confirm the VIN via PM if someone thinks they know the car. (I'm not sure of the protocol regarding posting VINs on RL).

Thanks!

Lee

Just ran a carfax on this car. It had 120K miles in 2002. Looks like the second owner drove it backwards for most of the past 10 years.

Disappointing...it could have as much as 200K miles on it, which makes it a WHOLE lot less attractive.

Here's the link: http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/ctd/2834767652.html

Speedo clearly says 082...not 182...

To its credit, it was sold and serviced by a Porsche dealer local to me, and showed nothing unusual for 110K miles. 50K service (brakes and rotors), 90K service (oil change), 110K service (timing belt). Then, the second owner purchased it and took it to New Hampshire, where it shows a couple of state inspections and nothing further.

Think it's still worth looking at?

Here's the story on RS820150:

#1,347 of 2,234 North American 968 coupes
#90 of 718 1994 NA 968 coupes
1 of 595 A1 Black 968 coupes (most popular color on NA 968 coupe)
1 of 317 Black coupes with a black interior (most popular combo)

Options include LT partial leather in black, XD4 painted crest center caps, 220 limited slip, it is a 718 car so it was originally born a 1993 (built May 1993) and reVINed as a 94 so it has the 944 style seats.

Thanks Jeff, much appreciated. "944 style seats". Are they powered or manually adjustable? I see two buttons by the front of the lower bolster, but don't see power seats listed by the dealer.

Thanks!

944 style means they have horizontal ribs, as opposed to the later 993 type seats that have curved ribs. Either can come with a myriad of power, lumbar, material, heat, etc. Often you see 968's with the drivers seat having more power options for adjustment that the passenger seat.

Jeff, was it common for 16" wheel cars to get LSD? I would think owners who would specify LSD would be 17" kinda guys.

Okay Damian,

I went back to the data during lunch to get an answer for you:

For the coupes:
  • 2,234 NA produced
  • 1,811 with 6 speeds
  • 584 with LSD
  • 248 LSD with 17s (136 Cup1s, 112 Cup2s)
  • 336 LSD with 16s (my SY coupe is one of them)

For cabs:
  • 2,008 NA produced
  • 1,447 with 6 speeds
  • 300 with LSD
  • 94 LSD with 17s (43 Cup1s, 51 Cup2s)
  • 206 LSD with 16s

Thanks Jeff; that data is surprising to me, but you learn something every day. BTW, we drove past the park in Monmouth County last week where we had our first 968 meetup!

Car look pretty decent for the price. You should seriously take a look at it, but don't expect it to be perfect at that price, interior & engine bay will need a little TLC but exterior & paint look real good. What you'll need is a good PPI from an independant source.Btw the chain adjuster/upper-lower pads & chain should be look at with that kind of mileage. Do they have any maintenance records of the car?

No maintenance records. This dealership typically picks up cars at auction. The original servicing dealer (1994-2001, 110K miles) is local and I can stop by to talk with the service dept.

However, the last 9 years (and -30K miles) is an unknown. Yes, -30K. Speedo reads less today than what was reported by CARFAX for 2001.

Probably serviced by an independent in NH.

Dealership unwilling to let car go for the day for my mechanic to do a PPI. I may be able to find local independent to take a look...but with the unknown mileage, I will not buy this car without a good PPI!

Tell the seller you have to deduct the entire price of a belt job from the asking price, because you'll want to do that right away. AND maybe a clutch job too. Then leave some more money aside for other past due services.

200 k miles ? sounds like the seller is shady. then again, the engine if well cared for could be in very good condition... i would inspect the exhaust pipe. you can learn a lot. if it's a good engine, you can get to 400 k miles and never be too far behind the original hp numbers.
