Default New Tires Sumitomo's vs Hankooks

I'm going to need some new 17 tires - right now I'm looking at Sumitomo HTR III and Hankook V12 evo K110 - prices are hard to beat and right now tire rack has a $50 back offer on the purchase of four tires...weight seems to be a wash...so I leaning toward the Hankook's, but wondered if anyone had any first hand exprience with these or any other recomendations....

Thanks Sam

If you do a search, you'll find the Sumitomos are rating very well. They would be my pick.

Please call me, I'd love to help!

I looked at the Sumi's but went with the Potenza RE760 Sports. I was looking for a more quiet tire, but I'm not sure I got it. I'm now wondering if I should of taken the assumed performance advantage of the Sumi's and lived with the increased noise, (if any.) I am getting great mileage and responsiveness out of the 760's though.

Don't know if this helps at all.

I had Sumi HTRZIIIs on my 968 for over 15,000 miles. Great traction, good wear, and they were only getting a little noisy when I sold the car. Overall they were comparable to the old RE 750s that I had run previously, but cheaper. I'll put them on the 996 when needed.

Got RE760s on the XJ Sport. Good tires, definitely happy with the performance, although they're clearly not meant to be extremely aggressive. Can't comment on tire noise though, I never notice it in the first place...

I'm a huge fan of Michelin tires. Running Pilot Cups now, Pilot Sports prior to that.

+1. I run Pilot sports PS2 on my turbo. Great tires. Will last me 4-5 yrs since I barely drive that thing.

I'm getting a new set of tires in about a month or 2. I think i'm going to switch back to the Sport PS2's. The level of grip provided by the Pilot Cup's is insane, but they are far from practical. Untill they warm up, they have no grip...and they arnt fun when its wet outside.

I originally bought them because i only drive my coupe approx. 2,500miles annually and dont usually take it out in the rain. But i have been caught in storms more then a few times with it in the last year. Not sure if the extra dry weather grip is worth the money.

I just got Dunlop Direzza Star Specs (not mounted yet) but they rated very well on Tire Rack and, more importantly a recent magazine article that compared many of the extreme summer tires. I've seen these on a lot of DE track cars, too, so I am expecting them to perform well.

Thanks everyone - looks like I going to give Sumo's a try....

My long search for wheels is over - should be here this week I hope - more news and pictures to follow once I get them...

New wheels are 17x8 et52 and 17x9 et56 - I plan on running 225/45's up front and 255/40's on the rear...

I'm also thinking about putting a 4 or 5mmm spacer on the rears to bring them out just a hair...any thoughts on that?

Thanks again Sam

I'm running 6mm (1/4in) spacers front and rear. Love the stance. I bought the weltmeister ones from automotion. I'm running the 17" cup1 (not twist spoke) wheels with 225/255 set up. My car is also 1" lower than factory and still haven't had any problems with rubbing even at autocrosses.

I just put a set of Falken 452's on my 968 and I have to say I'm impressed. Falken's are a Sumo product and I'd recommend them.

Ok, baby got a new pair of shoes....finally found some 17's - Kinesis Supercups 8X17 et52 and 9x17 et56 weigh about 20 & 21 lbs respectably (using the old bathroon scale)...

Ended up going with Hankook ventus v12 evo k110's 225/45 & 255/40 (a little stretch on the fronts but looks ok to me...I'll see how do..) couldn't pass up the price - shipped and installed for $489 and there's a $50 rebate coming for buying before the end of this month...I will update after I get a few miles on them...
