I missed a shift today in qualifing and zingged the motor to 8393 rpm. It was mementary. It felt fine in the race. Do you think I hurt it?

that's insane. wow.
more proof these motors are nearly bulletproof before the limiter ? should i do my rod-bearings (now @ 115,000 miles)?

However, if you'd done any real damage, it's highly unlikely that you could have run a whole race without noticing it. If your valvetrain explodes, it won't be subtle, and if that overrev had weakened it almost to the point of failure, spending an hour at high RPM and high load would most likely have pushed it over the edge.

Thanks...I hope it is all OK. When you try to rush the shift too much it is sometimes slower!!

I find that my box is perfectly happy to shift VERY quickly...but only if I do it a certain way. It responds well to very direct, positive shifts...but it will not let me simply muscle it from one gear to the other any more than it will let me "limp-wrist" it around. A light grip on the **** helps. For relatively softer/slower shifts, I was once told "shift with your fingertips", and this has worked very well for me, but for very fast shifts I need a moderately tighter hold.

I am of the same group think that you probally not been able to run the day if you weakened it- Rev limiter? Chips removed it I take it?
Another thought, when I replaced my shifter to a short shifter and the same time I had the trans out, there are ball detent springs that can be changed or adjusted to get more of a postive snap feel. I may be able to find out what I used- or someone here may be able to expand on spring repalcement.
I felt it was a great improvement in feel which in turn allowed for a much stronger quicker shift input.
cheers, Mike

I think I may have got 2nd instead of 4th!! It was mementary as indicated by my AIM data. No evidence any engine issues at this point. I got the car out of the trailer and put it in the garage and the shifter didn't feel right so I backed it out and then I had no engagement of any gear. I must have broke something in the shift linkage. There is a roll pin on the side case behind a plate that might have sheared. I'm not sure!!

Mike-The shifting is most likely the pin you are referencing. there is a post out there that talks about it in detail with pics- here is a short version form a previous post-
Rich- I had a similar event on my 968 6spd. Mine happened between 3rd and 4th.but the same symptoms. It was an easy fix but I still removed the trans. The portion of the shifting mech when removed from the trans had a roll pin sheered off. I am refering to the selector shaft part #7 that the shifter rod rotates and where the ball dentents or "shift catches" for tension are. I was able to recover the broken pieces becasue they were a press fit and were still in the rod and the rotating gear. replaced the roll pin and back in action.
Also if you haven't removed one recently, remember to slide the clamping sleeve towards the transmission and remove it with the trans and not towards the engine. I can't tell you the head scratching that went on when I did it in reverse... RTM event.
Good luck, if I can help let me know- Mike

I have broke one before and it is externally replaceable from the side of the engine. Is that the same part?

It is externally replacable from the side of the trans- remove plate #4, and you will have access to the pin that hold #7 to its shaft. I am not sure but you should be able to get to it with the trans still in the car.- Cheers, Mike

Are the fasteners to hold the plate Torq bolts? They are a 6 point star pattern.
After buying the Torq bits they plate is held on with a T45 bolt.
