ASG tranny
Hi Crew!
My 6 spd. is whining pretty bad. I have been told that it is not the pinion bearing. So I bought a 944 ASG tranny to swap out in my car. I wish I would have done more research. I am being told that this will not be an easy swap. I was told that
I will need the following:
944 axles
944 bell housing and torque tube
944 shifter and linkage
Can someone confirm this???
Thanks

I don't think you need to change the bellhousing or TT. I mated a 968 6-speed to a 944 TT so you can definitely do it the other way around.
You will only need one 944 axle. This is because the 944 axles are both the same length, while one 968 axle is shorter, and the other one is 944-length.
I have no idea about the linkage, but you may retain your current shifter. As far as the long rod, and the linkage on the tranny, I can't advise. But if you need a 968 linkage couldn't you just take it off your blown 968 tranny?
How long do you plan to run with this setup? I've read that 944 NA trannies can barely handle the power of the 944, and they fail quickly given more power.

You will need to change the rod and linkage as well if I remember correctly. I don't have PET on my laptop but this is based on memory.
If you already have the 944 tranny, compare the two side by side and you will get your answer. TT will work fine, just the bell housing design won't match 100%. This does not affect anything though.

Yeah like Raj said, the rear bellhousing won't be the 100% correct shape for the 944 tranny, but all the bolt holes are 100% in the right place.

Hi Crew,
Thanks for your help. This is a street legal track car.
I had my car into Pete a couple of months ago and he wasn't sure what it was. Without all the noise deadening it is much louder. I have dropped about $7k into my car this winter and was hoping the motor and tranny would last the season, and I would rebuild everything next winter. I'm just not sure the tranny is going to make it. And the last thing I want is the thing to explode going through the Ses at Watkins Glen.
I also know that Pablo was running a 5 spd. because of the close ratio and better use of the power band.
So I bought the tranny on eBay, only to find out about 3 minutes later that it was not a direct swap.
So I am open to your thoughts!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the other guy was using an S or S2 tranny? Those are built tougher and can take the power, and they have closer ratios than the regular NA. Your asg box has the closer gearing but will probably munch with 236hp and track abuse.
If you're not certain the noise is coming from your tranny, you could take it to another shop for a second opinion?
It's close to a direct swap, and any other 5-speed you could get will have the same fitting needs.

Speedo pickup is different too.

True, but it doesn't affect putting a 944 tranny in a 968 - the 968 speedo pickup is through the ABS, the late 944 pickup is in the tranny, so you'd just have an extra unused plug.
