BMW recommends changing its micron filter every 15k. I think that is a safe mileage to follow.

Default filters are toast

Just took mine out and they were very clogged up and after gently tapping them out on the ground I noticed that they were torn at the folds of the media.. I will try to DIY some out of furnace filter media until I get some ordered. Where is the cheapest place to get the originals now days ?

Welcome to rennlist.

I was looking for these a few months ago. It looks like it's a Porsche-only part. Rockauto has a set of denso for $40 and Mahle for $53. Frankly, for what the cabin filter does, that's too much money in my book (but I'm a cheapskate I cleaned mine up and put them back in, but I'll probably look at retrofitting a furnace filter or something, mostly just to keep crap out of the fan and ducts.

Roger has a set of cabin filters for a 968 that I returned. I"m sure he would sell them very reasonably

I also have a brand new set from Mahle, if anyone is interested. $40 shipped slow boat within the 48 States.

I think it's easy enough to tell if you peek under the plastic cowl cover while standing by the fuse box - the early cars have an upright screen (as does mine) and no filter, and from the PET it looks like the later cars had a filter angled back at the top. I've not seen a later car to verify for myself, though.

Cabin filters were an option for 1995 only. There used to be a kit available from the dealer to retrofit the cabin filters that included a new upper air plenum and the correct flaps. The kit has been NLA for a very long time. The best way I've found to do a retrofit is to find someone parting out a car with the cabin filters and buy the entire assembly.

IMO, they're worth it. Porsche recommended change interval is every 12 months. I'm on my 3rd year. This thread reminded me that I probably should replace them.

I think I'm going to find some smaller filter elements and figure out a flange arrangement in the intakes. I would really like a set of filters. If someone would measure the LxW of the Mahle filters, I can start looking for something that will fit in there.

94's had cabin filters as well. I know this for a fact since both my cars are 1994 MY.
If a $50 part deters you from changing it, you own the wrong car. Looks like our cars will end up under-maintained just like 944's.

But were they a factory option or dealer installed option? What I was told when trying to locate a kit was it was a dealer installed option in '94, factory installed in '95 and could be retrofitted on any '86.5+ 944. If yours is factory installed, then my information is incorrect.

I bought a new upper plenum thinking that's all it would need only to find out otherwise. I ended up buying an assembly, but I still used my new upper. Dropped right in on my '87 951. Oh, I had to change the temperature probe too.

I ordered the filters from PartsGeek. $37.10 plus shipping for a pair.
