Just reviving this thread!!! Was it ever made clear as to what stamped numbers corrispond to what rear end being Torsen or ZF lsd. Picked up a trans the other day and just checking before installing it.

Below info is for '92 MY only. I believe '92 MY was only year when ZF LSd was available and '93-95 used Torsen.

If I had to bet I would say number 2 is replaced with number 3 on those '93-95 gearboxes which had Torsen from factory. Pic is from 11/1992 printed tech spec book so it doesn't have info for later MY's.

G = getriebe = gearbox in German language.
A = automat = automatic gearbox in German language, in 968 meaning always tiptronic

Ok!!!! Tranny is back in the car and everything is tightened up except for the cv joints. The biggest drawback was sliding the driveshaft coupler towards the tranny. It barely moved and it took me about an hour and a half to shove it back. Rust and 18 years of use I guess!!! Went back together alot quicker though Well tomorrow I'll finish er up and take it for a spin. It better move!!!The wifey is buggin me to take her out tonight so shop is closed. She takes all the fun out of diy projects. Update you guys tomorrow.

Well..... no pinion noise but there is a hum coming from the rear end. Maybe a wheel bearing??? Also did a few heavy launches and it did leave 2 black marks.

Sometimes, it helps to open up the 2 notches on the coupler a tad bit. You can lightly tap a flat screwdriver to seperate the spleens a bit. It helps in loosening the coupler on the shaft.

Oh, recently the circlip that holds the linkage shaft on top of the tranny slipped out of its groove. Needless to say the shifter throw became longer and longer until it would not shift any more. Replace the circlip when the tranny is out makes the job alot easier.

Now.... has anyone disassembled one. My spare pinion whining tranny has been sitting on the garage floor since the swap. I'm seriously thinking about ripping into it if I had some sort of a manual. I did my 72 915 tranny a while ago which was not that bad. Thoughts

if by 'lightly tap' you mean using a 2-foot screwdriver and a big hammer to open up the splines, yeah it helps.

Merry Christmas everyone.

How easy would it be to convert a manual to a tip?
