well sorry guys this was my fault i was stupid and aggravated cuase my clutch... i gave up on it last night and got back to it today and got it out in 5 minutes..i guess i jus needed a breather....but thanks anyway 968..and rich too badd we didnt make that bett official earlier

As I understand it the transmission housings are all the same as were the gearing for all 968s. So the option code is your only hope- Unless someone can enlighten me- I checked the service manual and there is no reference to a casting number and confirmed that there was only one type of manual housing and one gear set.
The only differences were LSD or not and of the LSD there were 2 types.There are a Torsen and Clutch type which will spin the tires forward when rotated. As posted before- The Torsen was an $800 option, the clutch type, option 221 as I understand it was a $1700 option. The prices today brand new stand at $2347 for a Torsen, and $4100 and some change for a Clutch Type...if you can find one. Both will spin the tires in one direction, with the only difference being how they work. One uses clutches, the other uses gears. Torsens are the most common among factory cars because they promote better handling (turn in) and are cheaper to produce. The clutch-types are found on higher end LSD's, although BMW has always used them. Either works well, clutch type is preferable, but costs much more-
Guys...? anyone used a casting mark? I have one on the rear of the diff 231 M 031. I cannot any reference to this number

Thanks Mike. My option codes list 220 as having a lsd, but when I spin the axles they spin in the opposite directions. Does the car have to be in gear for this to work? Never did on my 951, but just a thought. Maybe someone swapped out the tranny at some point or the lsd is worn.
So how hard is it to swap in a lsd into one of these boxes. I've heard it's easier then on a 951 box.

I already shipped my transmission for pinion bearing so I can't check but I remember something to the effect of G44002 with some numbers for serial number after that. The 2 would designate an lsd.
Can't remember if that was on a stamp or cast.

Raj- the factory refers to the trans model as being a G4400 so this makes sense. Where were the numbers?
As far as swapping out the Diff I have never done it in a 968. I have although incorrectly set a ring and pinion and ate through the cladding rather quickly....

I think it might be on top of the housing and that is why we can't see it. I wish my transmission was around to confirm. I remember reading these numbers, its been a while.

A picture of a transmission currently on Ebay.
You could clearly see the stampings as I said, G44001. So 968 transaxles do have numbers stamped on them.

.I have never heard of S2's with a 6 speed and even if they did, it would only trickle into the 1st model yr, ie 1992. Both my cars are MY 1994.

Perhaps that picture is on the bottom then because that would be the only place so far that I have not looked. My trans is out right now, and I can find no stampings, but it makes since if it is on the bottom, that way it can be seen when installed unlike the 944 trans.
