Is the 968 a "Shark?"
The 928 crowd takes great pride in comparing their cars to "sharks" (for the bulging eye headlights). However, the 968 has equally bulging, pop-up eyes too. Does anyone refer to 968s as "sharks?"

I know you're the 928 guy and I am not (not anymore) but I have to disagree on one point. The 928 is not a shark because of its lights, it's a shark because of the entire shape of the car, mainly the front clip, and more so on the OB. It's the sharp edge, the slight "overbite", the round shape going from center to outside, and the low, narrow, tall grill. The shape of the fenders and entire front altogether is a huge point too.
You gotta glimpse it and instantly think "shark".
Wow, those are amazing photos. Some creatures those are. What an amazing world we live on.

In my opinion, it would not be considered a shark because of the bumper opening/air vent. As Arash suggested, the whole front end of a 928 has a very shark like look to it. Part of it is the flush bumper, which is not the case with 968.
Also, 928 have some bulk to them which would qualify them to be more sharklike in my eyes.

The 968 headlight set up reminds me of the Lamborghini Miura's, which is perhaps my favourite car of all time. I just love it.
As for the "shark" thing ... sorry but I'd rather call the 968 a "gecko" : small, agile & swift.

Porsche's idea in the early 90's was to have homogenous design across it's model range.
Lamborghini Miura is perhaps one of the coolest cars ever made.

Anyone know who makes those ducts that replace the fog lights for brake cooling?

Actually I think the headlights are a big part of the shark resemblance, but only when they're not deployed, they sort of mimic the mirror-like, lifeless eyes of blue sharks which don't seem to look at anything. Once popped up, the 928 has traded its shark resemblance with that of a funny looking frog! Incredible how contemporary the GTS looks today, it's one of those Porsches that look much better 'in the flesh', it has road presence like nothing else really.

It's called a shark because of the profile
The Porsche 928 is called the shark or land shark, due to it's shark-like appearance and its ability to gobble up large stretches of road in short time.
If you'll look at the profile view of the front end, it has an overbite, as someone else already said. Along with it's solid-looking, chunky body, it's easy to see why it was nicknamed "shark".

It's funny that the 928 was modeled to look like the miura but failed. The 968 was made to look like a 911 and 928, and ended up looking like the miura.
The 968 headlights are very "Porsche" but the way it's executed on this car just always seemed a little feminine to me. The 944's sharp-edge hidden lights are much the opposite.
