hey guys,
still looking into a 968 as primarily a DE car. IIRC curb weight is 3082 so I figure I could pull 400 off it pretty easy with:

-gt3 seats 70#
-spare/tools 50#
-odyssey pc680 35#
-carpet/rear seats 35#
-lightweight Flywheel 10#
-fiberglass hood 25#
-fiberglass sunroof panel 35#
-sound deadening 25#
-stereo 15#
-exhaust/cat 30#
-headlight motors/assembly 35#
-pull door panels 25#
-add 40# for bolt-in rollbar
-manual steering rack 30#


Any other suggestions or more accurate numbers?

These numbers are mostly estimates from my experience with 993's...

do they sell rs door panels for a 968?

how much is heat/ac worth on 968's? how about manual steering rack?



I just want to make sure I can at least have a 10 lb/per hp power/weight if I decide to get a 968 (assuming 270 hp)...

The AC/Heater control unit is quite bulky and heavy, so there should be substantial gains with no compressor.
I would add AC delete into the list if you don't care about it.
GT Racing and AIR are the two places to check for lightweight parts and their availability.

Some of your weight estimates seem a bit optimistic, but reasonably close. Most of the stuff off of these cars is the same as a 944 and I remember a list floating around that itemized the weights.

You might want to try asking on the racing forum at 968forums.com or the nasa 944 challenge forum. You'll find that most 968 owners would rather polish their cars than drive them.

I have most of that stuff in the crawl space under my house, but I'm too lazy to pull it all out and weigh it for you. If there is something that you can't find a weight on, let me know and I'll dig it out and put it on a scale.

Switching the rear hatch over to Lexan save about 60#. The manual steering conversion doesn't save a whole lot of weight. Some people also find that the ratio and how the manual steering reacts is less than desireable.

I love my manual steering rack...after you're going about 40mph, you don't even feel the loss of power steering...although tight tight tracks have given me Popeye forearms...

I also especially love that I no longer have to worry about those leaks...and the fluid dripping!

Any suggestions for replace exhaust (back muffler)? I've heard that the original back muffler is quite heavy?

How much can you rely on these "foam" sprays, if you get rid of spare wheel?
Will they work so well that you can do 100km's with the broken tire filled with foam?

small light weight battery, remove rear seat, a/c removal?,spare tire,

go on a diet, and most importantly, concentrate on driving skills and time and not weight loss

If I remember correctly...that foam stuff ruins your rim!

Some of the fix a flat foams do attack the aluminum wheel and leave pits, and possibly more damage if left in there longer. Check the can for some info on specific ones. The stock cat back is quite heavy and doesn't flow as well as aftermarket ones. Im not sure what the exact weights are but after taking a stock one out and putting a aftermarket one in, there is a clear difference. RS Barn makes a cat back system that can also be used with or without a header, and with or without a cat. Do a search on the forum and you will find some good info.

All of the aftermarket exhaust systems give a weight decrease over stock; my Cargraphic is around 20lbs less if I remember correctly.

I have an exhaust that I had an exhaust shop make with a 100 cell cat and a flowmaster, it's about 22lbs. lighter than stock, but quite a bit louder.

Isn't the sunroof panel already made of fiberglass? It was on my 944.

Don't forget to delete the sunroof motor and stuff. I'd love it if I could delete the sunroof and just have a plain solid roof. Too much work for me though.
