Radar detector development doesn't seem to have changed much in the past few years. What's the trend and are they worth it? (I have a V1 and like it. It's saved me a lot of dollars...but I don't like the wire and cops have strategies that it won't catch). Any comments on this?

Harvey,
I've just installed the Escort Passport SR7 with shifters. I'm very pleased with it. The system provides alerts to all radar and laser signals. It will also warn of instant on X-band and Ka band .
I can receive alerts front the front or rear of my car.

Harvey, do you have a hard wire kit for you V1? My friend has it in his 20th AE GTI and there is no wires in the way. He has it mounted above the rear view and I really liked it.
On a side note I have been trying to decide which model to get myself. My old radar detector didn't seem to do much anymore and I have been going with nothing for a couple of years now. I am leaning towards the V1 since so many people have had good experiences with them.

I'm not sure which detector is best now. I like the V1 bars...tells me where the radar signal is coming from. That's really helpful. You'd be surprised sometimes. But, in town, it's about useless as so many things set it off.

Harvey,
Try going to www.radarbusters.com. I found the website to be very helpful when comparing different radar systems.
Hope this helps.

A friend of mines dad had a V1 in his M coupe. He did a wonderful job of putting the wires under the headliner down the side of the front door and put the concealed display right on the dashboard. I'll try to get pics if anyones interested. I've always heard good things about the V1 from him. I need to buy one but I need a new exhaust pipe first.

I'm a hardocre V1 enthusiast myself. In a 968, its a VERY simple task to wire it to the overhead light, so that you are dealing with wires and it puts the unit in an ideal location, functionally speaking. Its also very easy to conceal when its mounted up by the visors.
Detection-wise, its been superb. It's not the newest thing out there, but it works very well for me, and I am ticket free since getting one (um, at least when I had it with me, I did get popped in a rental car but thats another story). I have considered augmenting it with laser jammer type device, but in my Porsches, it always seems to tak eth eofficers a couple of tries to get a reading on my car (no front plate on my cars), so that has given me plenty of time to slow down so far. A buddy of mine picked up the latest greatest Radarbuster approved unit last summer and was giving me hell about my "old POS" (his words) just before we went on a cruise. About thirty minutes later, we are on the highway and my radar detector goes off, so I slow down, and he starts teasing me over the radio about how bad my V1 "falses" since his was quiet. He crested the hill and got popped by the State Patrol. Oops.

I am also in the V1 camp. I have used several radar detectors in the last year and the V1 is very reliable. I also had my concealed display modified to have color LED's.

V-1 is the way to go. You can get yours upgraded with the latest POP 2 software which reads all types for about $ 75.00.
I use mine on my sport touring bike, truck and P-car and it has saved me many times. They are built to last. Some of the hard install units are nice but not switchable between your vehicles and cost a lot more.

I don't have the Pop2 upgrade. Only $75 eh? I didn't know that. I think V1 has a lifetime warranty and you can turn it in anytime and, for half the purchase price, get the new model. I keep waiting for their new model that never seems to come out! Avertisement aside, I do like the arrows. I've used it and passed unmarked cars on the road eminating radar signals.
Also, between here and Seattle, there are lot of "fake" radar signals...that is, bridges, signs, etc. that have radar transmitters designed to set our detectors off. Sometimes, there's a real cop sitting near the sign after you get used to it. Don't ask me how I know.
