Pinging

Pinging
For the last few months I have been experiencing noticeable pinging in the engine.
I questioned my mechanic and he said it was probably the gas, but I have not changed my fuelling habits.
The car is a 94' 968 with less than 60k on the odo. Otherwise everything else is fine.
Has anybody had a similar situation? Thanks.

Pinging could be caused by a bunch of factors. I would start by removing the plugs to see what color they are. You could possibly have carbon deposits. Are you going to the same gas station? What kind of octane is it? I would also try techron, throw a bottle in every few weeks to see if that cleans the deposits.
Hopefully, its not something mechanical. A clogged cat can have these symptoms as well. Check to see if your cat glows red when you run the car.

I have not changed the gas, I always put in Amoco 93. I will pull the plugs and check the cat also. I will let you know what I find if anything.
Thanks for your responses, as always a great help.

i have no idea what amoco 93 is, or how it is measured, but if it's a minimum of 90 (measured as RON+MON/2), then that is fine
the fact that you haven't changed fuel could actually be a component of the problem - if deposits are high, then the octane rating needed to keep it from pinging goes up, because the compression could actually go up, but it would have to be pretty serious - as said, check the plugs - if you have a lot of carbon, do a run-rite treatment and change the plugs
however, the anti knock sensors should stop this from happening - i'd verify their status before going any farther in diagnosis

well, by either measuring method, it should be fine - by the old method, it is the minimum
so, i'd check those knock sensors first, to see why they aren't telling the DME to start retarding the timing so you aren't pinging
