Default camshaft belt roller 944.105.241.02

I am reassembling the front of my motor... with all new belts, rollers, waterpump, and automatic camshaft belt tensioner.

One of the new rollers is part number 944.105.241.02... #7 in the included picture)... a small diameter smooth metal surface roller... and it is proving to be a mystery.

The 968 factory manuals do NOT show this part being used. However, if you check the the PET... it DOES show this part for the 1995 968 (#7 on the enclosed picture). Weird. Additionally... the PET gives a bolt number to be used to secure it (same part number bolt as the bolt to hold in the black plastic roller above it... roller #6 in the picture which is the roller just to the right of the waterpump pulley... and they list the bolt as an M10x30).

Yes, this size bolt fits the 944.105.241.02 roller just fine... but it does not fit the hole where I believe it should go (see picture) to secure it! The diameter is wrong. This hole is for an M8 bolt... and worse yet, there don't appear to be any threads in this hole! The hole is 50mm deep... and maybe there are threads deep within... I just can't see them.

So, I hope that someone can help me out. Does the '95 968 use this 944.105.241.02 roller or not? If it does...where does it mount... and what part number is its retaining bolt? (it would appear to have to be a stepped-diameter bolt... and if so, then the part number in the PET is wrong)

Thanks for your help!

The unthreaded hole is left unused, otherwise it would be threaded (!).

Pulley 944.105.241.02 is usually mounted on the spring tensioner of late 944s.

That it was reproduced on that 968 PET page is a mystery to me as it looks like it is not meant to be used along with a hydraulic tensioner.

What do 968 experts think ?

Thom...

Geez.. the hole is 50mm deep... and I can't see any threads. That doesn't mean that there aren't any deep within!

Roller 944.105.241.02 is NOT mounted on the spring tensioner of late 944's. The rollers on the 944 spring tensioners are either 944.105.631.04 (M44.11/12/52 models) or 944.105.631.05 (M44.41 model). Roller 944.105.241.02 is mounted right above the crank pulley on the 944S2 (I know... I had a '91 S2)... and it is used for the camshaft belt.

This roller is on the 968 PET camshaft belt drive page... but the roller is not in the factory manual... and I cannot find how to mount it on the 968 since the bolt for it (N.010.230.5) which is #17 on the PET does not fit the hole above the crank I show in the picture

I hope someone can tell me if they have used this roller on the 968!!

The sketch in PET shows roller 944.105.241.02 is mounted right on the spring tensioner. I guess it's wrong then.

Was that roller and the related screw on your block when you took the belts and rollers off ?
If not then you have your answer : PET is wrong, which adds up with what's in the 968 WSM.

Thom...

The PET drawing for the S2 is confusing. This 944.105.241.02 roller is not what is on the spring loaded tensioner... the 944.105.241.03 is.

I took things apart a month ago... and I cannot find the roller or bolt anywhere. I am extremely methodical when working... and have never... never... lost a component in 30 years of working on cars. Did I lose it somehow? It is very hard to believe that I did. And frankly, I just don't remember whether this was there or not... but I had ordered a new one based on the PET listing.

Now that I am reassembling... and cannot find the old roller or bolt... and this new roller does not work in the location where I believe it would go... I have to ask others whether this does or does not get used in the 968. The factory manual does not show this roller... but the PET does. Very confusing.

Flash...

Jeez... why didn't I write yesterday! :-)

I had a link sent to me that shows no roller down by the crank pulley (the S2 uses this roller... and also has the PET saying that it uses it... just as the PET says that the 968 uses this roller, too). See it here:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~dverbeek/fotos/968-belts.jpg

It is so very weird that the factory manuals don't show this roller for the 968... but the PET does! if you are back in your motor again soon... please take a shot for me.

Thanks,

I have never seen a 968 with that roller. The dealers will send you the part based on PET which in this case is inaccurate.

Raj...

Thanks for confirming the PET is wrong. Jeez... the dealers sell the roller for the 968 (wouldn't you think that they would have discovered that this is an error?)... and a lot of 3rd party vendors out there sell this roller, too, for the 968. Unbelievable...

In my case... I had to do a double-take since I knew I have used this roller. Had I lost the old 968 roller after disassembly? (I never lose parts... but I guess there is a first time for everything, right?). I had an S2 that preceeded this car that used this roller... and I thought that the 968 did, too. Unfortunately... the PET played right into this and told me the 968 used it... even though the factory manuals did not show it.

It is always fun when Porsche documents contradict one another!

Thanks again, Raj.

Jim, I always have to tell Sunset Porsche to leave that out. All dealers usually base their parts on PET.
Regards.

Raj...

I guess I will have to tell them to leave it out next time, too!

Thanks, Raj.

I'll answer my own question. Yes, there will. Jim installed his Porsche rebuilt water pump and the friggin thing leaks! Drip, drip, drip [make that DRIP, DRIP, DRIP] out the front of the pump. What a PITA. Doesn't anyone have quality control these days?
