Default Need waterpump!!! Can anyone provide a lead?

Mine's leaking like crazy.
Can't find one anywhere.
Don't want to go the junkyard route for obvious reasons.

I'm in a jam here; anyone have any ideas?

Any Porsche dealer can obviously get you one, new or rebuilt. Sunset in Beaverton, OR has the best prices. For non Porsche I'd recommend Paragon Products, www.paragon-products.com.

I stand corrected. Spoke today with a friend who was also looking for a 968 water pump. He contacted Sunset and they said they have 0 rebuilts in stock and there are 0 in Germany. They also have 0 new pumps ($460+) and they show 1 in Germany. First come, first serve I guess. Maybe another dealer might have one but it does look like they are hard to get from the dealer.

As for Paragon, Jason remarked to my friend that the rebuilts seem to be a higher quality casting than the new pumps. Since this is 2nd hand info I'd verify that with Jason before ordering.

Cheers.

I posted on this to the three major 968 boards. The most comprehensive thread developed on 968forums. Someone there referred me to Automotion.com, who sold me a rebuilt: they have their own rebuilder.

Got the rest of the parts through Jeff at Sunset Imports.

Nice to hear from you, Tom! Still enjoying those wheels you sold me!

I wonder when this shortage developed? I had mine replaced last fall at the local dealer - he had to order the pump, but had it in a couple of days.

I'm curious how many miles owners are getting on their 968 H2O pumps before replacement. I've replaced mine once in my S2 about 70K miles and 8 years ago. I think the belts are about due for replacement... so I'm thinking I should probably do the pump again even if it's not leaking... or is that a bad idea?

This will be the 2nd pump for my car: 1st went in with a previous owner around 37K mi if I recall.
It's hard to see a reason to replace a pump proactively: don't they almost always start by leaking?

It all depends if you got one of the ones with metal impeller or plastic, the plstic ones don;t last as long and there seems to be no rhyme or reason for which car gets which.

Is there a reliable place where one can send their old one for a rebuild? I know some distributors here in the US do that...but don't know where they send them. I have an extra 968 core (25k miles) that I'm saving that I might have rebuilt if these things are getting scarce.

Most people with 968's usually swap them at 120K.

The rebuilt that I bought from Sunset that was ordered from Germany had a metal impeller. About $15 extra shipping.

My friend Jim has been going 'round and 'round with water pumps for his '95 968 and this is what we've found out. Don't expect it to make sense

The original Porsche part no for the 968 was 944 106 003 00. The PET shows this number has been dropped and the new number is 944 106 021 24, which just happens to be the part number listed for the '89 and on 944, i.e., the 2.7 8V and the 3.0 16V S2.

Paragon Products lists a NEW water pump for the 968/S2, but only with the original 968 part no. The price is about $293. I believe this pump is made by Laso, an OEM supplier.

If you go to www.egermanparts.com and look up the water pump for a 968 they list only a NEW pump, also made by Laso, with a price of $274.95. This is the pump Jim purchased. It's marked with the original 003 00 number and also the 021 24 number.

So far so good.

Now, if you try to look up a water pump for a 1990 944 S2 on EGerman it only shows a REMANUFACTURED pump for sale, for $123.13 with a core charge of $65.

Thus... if you want a NEW pump for your 968 or S2, buy one from Paragon, EGerman or other supplier with similar pricing. If you want a REMANUFACTURED pump, get the S2 pump from EGerman, etc.

One other thing. I believe ALL these online suppliers buy their parts from the same distributor, World Parts. What you see on the various websites are just different front-ends to the World Parts catalog, and it seems they all have different pricing structures.

Hope this helps.

This kind of information is what makes Rennlist so great!

Thanks, Tom.

As Tom has mentioned... I am having some interesting issues with finding a new waterpump for my car. Though mine is not leaking... the car has 74k miles... and I thought I would change the pump prophylactically as long as I am doing all belts and rollers. Porsche has no waterpumps at all in the US... no new ones or rebuilt... and the only new pumps are Laso (claimed to be OEM). I have received two... and like I said, they are supposedly OEM... but their casting and machining is different in quality than the original factory pump. I will write more in the next few days when this all sorts itself out.

My factory pump has the plastic impeller... and is still in perfect shape. My pump is in great shape overall.... is not leaking... and I am wondering about reinstalling it. This is not... I repeat... NOT... a monetary consideration... it is one of not being satisfied with the quality of the replacement pumps with their casting and machining.

What I want to know is... how many of you are seeing more than 75k miles on their pumps. I believe that the pumps last longer due to the hydraulic/spring automatic tensioner used in the 968... but HOW long?

Thanks for any feedback.

-- Jim

PS... And Raj... how many guys do you see having the pumps last 120k as you mention?
