Default Variocam Inspected

My afternoon started out with GSS (gummy starter syndrome). Since I was not going out to dinner with GSS I decided to inspect the belts and variocam. All teeth are present and accounted for. A friend who is a mechanic stopped by and looked things over commenting that there was only normal wear. I have put the valve cover back on and plan to check it again in a couple of years 10K - 12K miles.

Does anyone know why half of one of my links is blue?

I am hoping to retension the balance belt, change the fuel check valve and fix the GSS over the weekend.

Here are some pics, high res link below each

The cahin looks good, the pad shows wear and the cams have very slight wear on the teeth. You can see the deeper ridges formed from the chain stretching in the past.

Raj, do you think I should do anything now or leave it for a while? I would love to inspect yearly and change in 2009 at 90k.

I think it looks pretty good, and you have a good plan.

As for the blue link, didn't they intentionally put a "marker link" on the chain so that its easier to see when the chain has made a complete revolution? I thought I heard Joska say that at Hershey inb '03, but someone needs to confirm that, as I have no verification of the info.

Regards,

I am quoting George with the stealth cab "Don't panic. You will find that you have 'TWO' blue links spaced 7 links apart. This is normal and means that the chain is a stock Porsche part. The purpose of the two blue links is to set up the timing differential between the intake and exhaust cams. When you put the chain on the two cams, both blue links should be at 12 o'clock on each cam with the 'wedges' on the cams pointed up (12 o'clock) with the crank at TDC. Once the engine starts turning this will change and is only designed for the initial setting. It makes things really simple."

Although I do not see a specific mention of blue links the service manual does mention two links that are marked seven links apart.

The valve cover is back on now. I hope to leave it on there for a year, although I will probably get worried and take it back off over the winter.

Some notes

A neighbor loaned me a Snap-On torque wrench with a 30 - 200 inch pound range. I set it to 84 (7 ft pounds) and found it very easy to torque the bolts and stop at the right point. I have larger torque wrenches but have not used one that small before.

The fuel hoses are a pain to reconnect. I found I had to connect the rear hose first and then the front one. This is the opposite of how it should work if you want room to work. Next time I will disconnect them on the passenger side of the car and leave them connected over the valve cover.

I broke the gasket for the variocam solonoid seal. I made a new one from gasket paper using scissors and a dremel. It is thicker than the original but seals well. If anyone finds themselves in the same situation let me know and I can mail you some gasket paper, I have enough left for another 40. Next time I may try to remove the valve cover without removing the solonoid seal. It will make removal a little more difficult but I "think" it can be done.

the blue link could be the master link - on some chains that's where they want you to break the link by pushing the pin part way out to seperate the chain
