Default FS: 968 Engine, torque tube, transmission

I have commited myself to swapping out the 3.0L in the 968 and going to the 2.5L from a 951. Now I'm not trying to turn this into an argument on the subject of the swap, but i'm trying to sell the old motor and other bits.

Anyway listed for sale:

135k Mile motor: I might seperate it out if people wanted me to
(motor is complete with wiring harness, fresh clutch, bell housing, and computers)

torque tube

Non LSD 6-Speed

All parts are from a 1993 968.

I would consider partial trades on these items, wheels, suspension bits, and 951 / S2 LSD's are all welcome items.

wow - big project

only one suggestion - get a bigger fridge to hold all the beer you will need

josephsc on 968.net did somewhat the reverse - he put a 968 engine in a 944 - he might be helpful to you

Ian, why get rid of the best part of a 968, its 6 speed transmission. It can handle a lot more power than a 951 unit.

Raj,

The 6 speed is an open diff unit, I would rather have the 951 or 944 S2 LSD box in the car. If I sell off enough parts i'll keep the 6 speed, put it on a shelf and wait till I can afford to swap a suitable LSD unit into it.

apparantly not too tough - i think it was raj that said it can be fairly easily installed through the side without even dropping the transaxle

the guy who did mine said it was a snap

the best guy on this box is bobby hart - you can reach him at 928-855-5755 - i wouldn't waste his time too much though unless you were going to send it to him

Ian, I don't remember making that claim but I could be wrong. There is a side window on these transaxles that can be opened to install the LSD. Supposedly, its still a 3-4 hr job as it requires proper shimming.

yeah, i'm not sure it was you or not raj - could have been john hajny - it was one of the guys here who does a lot of wrenching - whoever it was just said it wasn't too tough and could be done in the car

Next question, what is the value of the head, computer, headers, bell housing, clutch, and torque tube.....

i'm thinking about saving the shortblock (well i'd get rid of the pistons too) and saving the parts to build a 3.0L 8v motor down the line.....

The guys that are swapping the lsd's without dropping the trannys are track junkies that are going through their trannys on a regular basis and don't mind getting limited time out of the install. For an install that is intended to last a while, pull the tranny and do it right, and make triple sure you get the preload set properly, or you might wind up with a nasty surprise on your hands. Its not a black art to set one up properly, lots of guys know how to do it but far fewer spend the money to get the proper tools.

As for the 6 speed vs 5 speed, my personal preference would be to mate the turbo with a 5 speed, seems like you would spend too much time "rowing" through the gears with a 6 speed, especially if you track your car. Thats a personal preference tho, and I have been known to say that I think the average driver would probably be just as fast on a track with a tiptronic, so take it for what its worth. I did take my 968 cab/tip out on the track recently and passed enough people in "proper Porsches" to be able to back this claim up.

Ian, you are as bad as me about changing your mind about your cars! lol Weren't you selling this carnot long ago because you didn't like the color, and before that, your were "simplifying" to save on money? Nice to know there is a kindred spirit out there!

Regards,

Ian, you will be dropping the trans anyway, so why not get it done right. This is what I would price parts at based on your mileage.
head - $750-$1000 if the cams are perfect.
computer - $200 ( I might be interested)
headers - $250-$300
bell housing - No one will pay for this.
clutch - No one will pay for a used clutch. Remember this is the 968 crowd. Most of the guys go to dealers for service
torque tube - not sure of the condition of the bearings so $150-$200
Hope that helps.

Raj,

I was thinking the bell housing, clutch, and torque tube would make nice combo for someone in the S2 Camp, with those parts someone has the 968 clutch changing procedure, which is 8 hours shorter than that for the S2....

But thanks for the pricing.

If you don't mind me asking, does anyone have a link to the site that sells the GT LSD? I assume it will work on an S2 trans, that looks like the ticket (off in the future, I am poor from just purchasing two transmissions in the past week, long story).

Ian: when you posted the 968 gearbox for sale on the Rennlist classifieds you said "because its from a 1993 the pinon gear issue won't be a problem. "

What's that about? First time I've heard anything like that. Would certainly make me happy....
