968 head on S2 block
I had talked to someone about this before (probably Raj) but I can't find the old posts. Oh well, here go the questions.
Is a 968 head a direct swap with an S2 head?
Would I need more than the 968 DME for the VarioCam to remain functional?
Would I also need a 968 intake manifold or will the S2 unit mount up to it?
Can I retain the S2 AFM and exhaust manifold?
I'm thinking that this may be a simple way to add 40hp to my S2.

After some of the variocam failures I have been hearing about lately, I was thinking about going the opposite way and setting mine up like an S2. Wanna swap?
Just joking... altho I can't say that I have heard of as many problems with the S2's as I have with the 968's.
Regards,

I haven't had any problems with my Variocam either. I should really be a bit more exact in how I phrase this... the concern is that the variocam has caused premature failures of cam sprockets, which in turn leads to some fairly catastrophic failures. This is different than the tensioner pad failures that the S2's have experienced.
These "concerns" have been commonly voiced on the internet, but I have talked with two professional shops that are familiar enough with 968's to believe that its something to watch out for. The cure, of course, is to change out the components at the first sign of wear on your cam sprockets, which you need to check from time to time.

Yes, you need to the harness as well as the S2 harness has no variocam fittings in it.
Probably an intake manifold as they are slightly different. Not sure if the S2 manifold has a dual resonance design.
Not sure why you would do that as the MAF is a more precise and faster acting device to measure airflow.
Exhaust manifold is the exact same so no need t swap there.
Also, something to look at would be injectors. PET would be a good way to see if the injectors/fuel pump and FPR are same. If so, then you don't need to swap any of those items.
The 968 DME is mapped to react to a MAF, installing it to a AFM might cause some issues due to response time and accuracy.

Duh, I forgot that the 968 uses a MAF and not an AFM like the S2.
I would think that the FPR and fuel pump are the same but I'll check PET. I think the injectors are different but don't quote me on that.
I think I may go this route over the next winter when I rebuild my motor. I need to start the seach for a good 968 head. I should get a 968 intake also while am at it.
Thanks Raj!

Songzzz, I won't be doing this swap until this winter most likely. If you still have it then, I'll let you know.
Shipping from Singapore has got to be a killer, though.
