Looking for the last new 968 ever sold
#47
Very few people probably care but here goes...
There is also 2.5 or something like that date which is latest first regitration date. When overaged models are standing in dealer showroom sometimes they will have to be registered by dealer before certain date even if there are no buyers because old model cars can no longer be registered after certain date as more safety, emission etc regulations come to use. Usually factories phase out old models some months before they would require expensive modification to meet new regulations. But if old models remain unsold they will eventually have to be registered as new vehigle or it will become impossible. Thus its possible car remains registered but unsold at dealer before its sold.
There are two or more separate VIN sequences for each model. ROW, US/Canada and sometimes other market specific sequences as well. This means two or more separate sets of VINs were made at the factory all mixed together based on what market car was meant for. This means ROW and US VIN sets cannot be directly compared against each other.
Another confucing thing is that on case of many models which were available in different body styles each style has its own VIN sequence within each market it was made for. This includes 968 also. There were in fact 5 different sequences for '95 S model year 968, ROW coupe, ROW CS, ROW cab, US coupe and US cab. Each of these had their own 13th digit number in VIN.
To make matters even more confucing US model has two separate VIN numbers. Body is stamped with ROW style VIN but with different US specific market number in 13th digit to differentiate it from othervise similar looking ROW VIN series. A pilar plate, door and option code stickers have another VIN which has safety equipment info in 4th to 6th digit and check digit at 9th which is calculated from other 16 digits in US VIN.
0061 is first production model VIN. It has been for long time. For example see 928 VIN info.

All Porsche VINs on cars made since '83 MY seem to follow same formula except some rare cases.
Hi Rich. I enjoyed reading the article on your cars. My '95 968CS has a VIN that is 46 before your blue car. I'm interested to know not just the inservice date of your blue car, but also the build date. As mine was built in September 1994, and both yours and mine have numbers that are roughly in the middle of the range for '95 and pretty close together, it'll be interesting to see how long it took Porsche to make 46 cars. Doesn't mean much, but it will help build a picture of how the assembly line flowed during that period.

Hi Rich, I'm not totally sure what is correct but I have a strong thought. My personal opinion is that Morgan's book is wrong on the production figures because he uses the VIN range. I have been registering Cab VINs for 5 years now and have never registered a car with a VIN lower then 61. My opinion is that the first car sold in every year was #61. My cab database supports the publish VIN range. I don't have a single car above the individual yearly range. If that last car sold in 95 was 258 then I think the true production number is 258-60 or 198 cars. This theory holds true for my cab database (which now has over 300 cars) and also for Porsche sales documentation that I have. So, how do I explain your car and the 968 coupe I saw on eBay? I can't. Oh well.

Where do you place my (under construction) race car? It's built on a factory turbo S unibody but doesn't have a VIN. Come to think of it, the motor's not likely to have a serial number if I use a new block, and I have a transmission with a replacement front case, so no serial number there either.
Since I haven't finished the car, I figure when I do it will be the last 968 made?

Turbo S cars were street cars and have VINs; do the factory race cars such as the RS models have VINs, as they weren't built for street use? A spare RS tub wouldn't have a VIN?
And anytime I've seen the RS models, they are usually referred to by chronological order or chassis number, not VIN.

Try not to take me too seriously. I'm sure you realize my car isn't "factory" and I'm not in the hunt for the last made 968.
But, a spare shell is a spare part, just like any other. The VIN would be transferred from the car it is being used in, so the spare part doesn't have a VIN. I have a blank area on the firewall.

Damian,
You are right, and it looks like both the S and RS have their VINs start with 61. So they are "street" cars.
I found this.

Check the spec sheet on the red RS, it has a VIN.
Ending in number 65.

Every year and every series starts at 61 again. There were actually 8 968s sold in the US with the last three digits of the VIN being 108, yours being one of them ( 1 cab, 1 coupe, for each of the 4 years)

There is M718 option listed in itc's option pic. Its usually used when car is made before normal model year production period. There were two different sets of 928 GTS made with it and some 964 Turbos as well. All were US model which had future model year VIN months before model year usually changes in July/August of previous calendar year. For example early '93 MY US 928 GTS were made already in Janauary 1992 when first row '93 MY GTS were made 6 months later in late summer 1992. It was and possibly still is ok to use next year VIN starting at January 1st of current year.
Did US '95 968 use M718 option similarly? Were all done before 08/94-07/95 period or just part of the MY production? As 0364 is so close to end of sequence and if M718 was used same way as in other cases its likely none of the '95 MY US models are actually true '95 MY cars. For example early '93 US 928 GTS use same parts as '92 MY ROW cars since they were made at same time in spring 1992. Similarly first 19 '94 MY US GTS were made in spring 1993 and are same as last ROW '93 MY cars and do not have '94 MY updates. In case there were any changes for true '95 MY 968 US cars didn't receive them in production line. Though likely there weren't but still '95 MY cars are in reality '94 MY nad are '95 based on VIN alone if above is correct. Might not be news in here but I didn't know also 968 used M718 option.

I'm sure you already know but your cab does not have the "club coupe" specs as dispayed. Porsche reuses option codes codes, such as P07, which back in the 968 days refered to the standard cassette player.
