Default Better to buy a '91 - '92 turbo or hold out for a '93 - '94

A little background..

I have owned several P-cars and most recently a Lotus Elise. The Elise was a fun track car but forget about driving it long distance.

I love the 911 Turbo and believe this is my next purchase, one I want to keep. I have driven a 965, 993TT, 996TT. And I love the rawness of the 965's. I am extremely picky about the condition of my cars. I drive them but they are also well maintained and very clean.

The question: Is it better to buy an earleir 965 or a later model? I know the 3.6L cars will be quicker but can a 3.3 L be upgraded? I want a mint car with low miles and I'm not sure if I should concentrate on a earlier 965 or a '93, 94 model year. Can I go wrong either way?

What's the concensus?

If money is no option try and find a 3.6 turbo. But you can always find a 3.3 turbo in near mint condition. You can't go wrong either way... Good luck shopping!

Thanks. Besides the motor, is there any other mechanical differences to be concerned about?

You can't go wrong either way. The fun factror on both cars is probably the same and I would suggest that resale wise they will both hold their value well. If you want something a little more special and have the $$s get the 3.6. If you're looking for a track car, or have plans to put a lot of miles on it, get the 3.3. Or get either one in the color combo you like.

Whatever you do, get a thorough PPI by a specialist that knows these cars well. A low mileage example alone is not necessary insurance against mechanical difficulties. As with all older Porsche's, I'd consider these cars pretty much bullet proof if they are maintained well.

Don't worry, they both can be modded.

The 3.6 Turbo has larger wheels, larger brakes, besides the larger engine.

So it depends on what you want to do with the car. One thing for sure, the Turbo 3.6 will always be the more desirable car for resale. As it stands today, the difference in price will pay for enough modifications to the 3.3T to make it superior in acceleration and handling to a stock 3.6T.

My vote, wait for the 3.6T. Had one. Killed one. But it was great while we were together

OK. The 3.6 will be the target vehicle. It appears that there were not a lot of these cars built for the US market? The search will begin this spring. Please keep me in mind if anyone out there decides to sell their 3.6.

Thanks,

Brad

Be prepared to spend north of $60-$65K (seen them well over $75K) for a beautiful 3.6L 965...I love this car...you're getting into 993TT money for that..why not buy a 993TT?

For that money you can buy a mint 3.3L 965 for $45K spend $20-$25K on the engine, clutch and suspension and have 500+whp at your right foot...something to think about.

We should probably define "a lot" I think there were just over 400 in the U.S. I believe Cobalt (Anthony) posted the numbers a while back.

I drove a 993TT and prefer the "rawness" of the RWD 3.6T. It all depends on what you are looking for. I also think given the rarity, the 3.6T will hold it's value extremely well over the long haul. Enjoy the search!

993TT.....Thought about it, drove one and loved it. The only complaint, dare I say it, the car seemed to tame. The turbos work so well together that you never really "feel" that boost come on. The 965's boost kicks you in the pants! I like the raw feel of the 965's and earlier turbos. I prefer the 965's for the obvious reasons. There's a signal green 1994 3.6L for sale at RPM....$78,500!! Not sure I could stomach that much cash for a green car.

That green car has been there for a while. RPM ends up with some very nice cars every once in a while and Ray gets good remarks here on rennlist. Richard Sloan usually also has some 3.6Ts available.

BTW - you will find yourself modding your car with headers, 1 bar spring and maybe car bypass.

If kick in the pants with a 993TT is what you want, THAT IS NOT A PROBLEM. Very simple upgrades on these things to get you to a totally non-compromise 560HP... ECU / 5 bar FPR / and muffler bypasses will get you int the 480 HP range (costs about $2K). Simplest cars on the planet to upgrade....

Why not just go for a mint Turbo S...Choice of Package or Flachbau.
