Question Self Adjusting Tappets Question

I know someone here will definitely know this - do the 3.6 turbos have self adjusting tappets?

I've noticed in the last 500 miles or so a much more tappety noise particularly when driving next to a wall say. Its not loud but definitely noticable whereas before it wasn't.

If the tappets adjust themselves then presumably I dont need to do anything? and if so how long before they adjust?

thanks
Anthony

Unless someone changed the cam towers to 993 and use 993 hydraulic rockers, the rocker arms are mechanically adjusted in all 964 and earlier engines, including the turbo 3.3 and turbo 3.6. Typical adjustment is required somewhere between 10-15k miles depending on how it has been driven, sooner if the car is used on the track quite a bit.

Speaking from experience with the older engine, make sure the spray bars are not clogged to the rockers.

Is tappet adjustment an engine out job?

You do this with the engine in the car, I do all adjustment from below, I know others that do upper valves from above others do a partial engine drop for easier access. It's part of standard maintence, in my service book every 20,000 km, I do it every winter since my car spend a lot of time on the track.

A respected tuner told me not to bother adjusting tappets until you start to hear them...

The problem is that you don't hear them if they are too hard which is way worse (will burn the valves) than if they are too loose. You can see the problem here, "it's what you don't here that you should be worried about", sort of

Not a big thing to do yourself, first time it took me a whole weekend, now it takes about 4-5 hours, the adjustment is only 30-60 minutes the rest is changing oil, jacking up the car and removing stuff to make access easier.
