I was expecting that you cleaned the engine in place... Intact. If you took all of those parts off that explains it. That's more like a once in a lifetime cleaning.

Well at least every 25 years! I think it really depends on what your trying to achieve, it's possible to do a superficial job leaving everything in place but I'm too **** for that!

Unless these engines are have been kept up cosmetically over the years deep cleaning is required to get any worthwhile results. I think in the past when the 964 was the red headed step child 911 and had fallen down the food chain most owner's didn't bother when the engine got dirty past a certain point, open the engine cover OMG it looks like sh*t, where would I start? Check the oil, close the cover and keep driving. Out of sight, out of mind.

You are absolutely right. It depends on "who" owned and cared for the car in its history. I know my car has had very good caretakers throughout the years. I see 911 owners driving on salt covered roads. If you have enough money to buy a 911, you must own another car to drive when conditions are bad. Care accounts for the condition 25 years later, but most new 911 owners plan on getting a new car in a few years, especially today's porsche customers.

Nice work and thanks for the documentation. I really need to do the wheel wells in my C4 before it goes back together.

Well, at least when I had my 964 it looked like a motor under the rear lid. Now I open the lid and see this:
