I had some guy honking at me on the freeway, asking me to roll down my window and he asked if I wanted to sell my 964... all at ~75mph. I waived him off.
A few weeks ago, I was talking to some contractors in my driveway with the garage open when someone drove by, promptly made a u-turn and came running up asking if I'd sell. Given how much I am going to have to pay these contractors and in a moment of weakness, I threw out what I thought was a high number, he came back about $15k short on that day. Enthusiastic crowd around here.
The first couple of weeks that I owned the car I was solicited twice, both serious. I politely said I wasn’t planning on selling. I have been solicited here on Rennlist for the Spyder too, I turned down the offer but offered to help them find a car.
Not in my 993, but I had a wild encounter like this a few years ago:
I had someone chase me down, honking like a madman when I was driving my old classic T-Bird one day. I thought maybe the car was on fire or something. I pulled over to see what was wrong. A middle aged man came running at me from the honking car with with a thick Australian accent and huge grin saying "I gotta have the caaar".
I told him I wasn't interested in selling it.
He told me to name my price.
I pulled a ridiculous number out of thin air.
Less than 3 hours later, he owned the car, without ever having driven it, nor taking it to a mechanic.
It has become a real problem. I become worried that someone may carjack me. Some are so aggressive that they block you in your parking spot until you give them contact info (which is always false) or best yet is they chase after you and run out of their car if you get stuck at a light. There was an individual that came to a complete stop on the highway going the opposite direction while I was at a red light honking and screaming at me to give him a price for my turbo. nearly caused a major pileup.
I enjoy driving my cars but this is taking a lot of the fun out of ownership.
This was a few years back, but one day I was driving my 964 RSA through a residential neighborhood when a guy comes running at my car from the sidewalk. I’m moving slow and when he gets right next to me I stop, not wanting to hit him and curious to see what was up. He proceeds to spit on my windshield, then wipe it off with his sleeve. Then he holds his hand out, grinning like an idiot - he wants me to pay him for washing my window.
That took some pleasure out of owning the car that day.
I typically get compliments and stories of 911's owned in the past, "... what year is it, I used to own a 911 Turbo" and other similar commentary. It is interesting to be first-person witness to the evolved value and popularity of these cars. When I first picked mine up almost 20 years ago I thought I made a wrong choice. Porsche pundits were referring to the 964 as the "bastard child" of the 911 lineage with little hope of it becoming a "classic". I paid around $35k for it ('90 Coupe with 25K on the clock) and then watched prices plummet in the late 90's. All I know is that every time I get in and take it for a drive... I still get that grin of a 14-year old after his first kiss.
I drive the car pretty much every day in LA and get at least 2 or 3 verbals from drivers and a note or 2 every month. But, my car is nicer than any of yours.

That is exactly what is said, or they toss out a number "I'll give you 25k for it right now". The latter mostly when I pick up dry cleaning, which is located next to a weed shop.
