Default Lightweight Starter Motor Options?

As per the title, does anyone have any recommendations for a 1990 C2 3.8 starter motor? My only request is that it is lightweight...anyone have the details of the porsche motorsport one?

Brise 2.7kg:

Anything else to consider (Alternator already rebuilt unfortunately) along similar lines?

Ooh, quite like the idea of that.

Anyone know how much a standard starter weighs?

I thought 6kg to 8kg? So lighter and more powerful...and also a good part to replace.

There may be lighter available still hence the question...Raikku mentioned a motorsport version...

Another option

http://www.cambridgemotorsport.com/node/21113

But heavier and more expensive than the Brise

This also suggests they do one for our cars, but cant see anything about weight

So I called the number on the Brise website on Wednesday and was assured it would fit my 964 C2. Motor arrived on Friday looking nice and shiny. Today I joined the Rennlist elite that managed to undo the starter motor top nut. That's where the good part stops. The original starter motor has a really long shaft and looks nothing like the one in the link from the OP.

So beware, unless the starters changed midway through the 964 program, the one advertised aint gonna fit. I'm going to call them next week and see if we can sort out which one it needs. From the website, this one looks closer...

Hi,

well I bought a starter from Tim that they modified to my specifications because I am using a 1989 flywheel in a 1990 gearbox. Everything was fine and they even did a highspeed delivery to Luxembourg. The starter you got looks differently compared to the OEM setup, but simply measure the distance between the flange where the starter is bolted to the gearbox and the end of the pinion on both starters. The value should be identical with only a few mm of difference (based on their experience they changed this value for several starter types). If this is not true, well then there really is an issue.

Just let us know

This site lists the weight for the WOSP starter at 5 kg:

Hey Mark,

I tried this a while back but got stuck with the different versions, the long shaft goes into the bell housing on a bearing sleeve, I suppose to give strength..
Obviously not absolutely necessary if the starter is strong enough.

Thought I read somewhere the 996 part number on the OPC replacements now? so a 996 fitment is the same? May have imagined it!

good luck!

Cheers Nige! Bruse also do 996 GT3 versions as link above so maybe this is the one to go for...

Before that though Im keen to make sure there isnt a 1kg one out there or something. Raikku mentioned a motorsport version so ill check with him and then do a vfm sense test lol!

From what I have found out, 89-90 964s have a different starter motor, but it is true 90-94 964s have the same starter as the 993.
