the one with the shroud is used on the 964 and the 993 for the Tiptronics. So for the manual gearbox 964, 993 and even 996, there is only 1 starter, although the part number changed a couple of times. I'm quite sure the Brise starter fits, but we will probably know very soon.
PET shows different part numbers depending on year
89-90 is a 911 part no
Then there are 2 x 90 > options, motor type dependent, one with a 964 part number and one with a 996 pn
The earlier starter has a shroud over the pinion, where the later one is exposed
The bellhousing was shortened for MY90 and the starter ring gear was sandwiched between the flywheel and pressure plate instead of sitting on the face of the pressure plate (MY89).
After researching this extensively a few months back, I decided to go with this remanufactured Bosch unit for my '94 C4. It was noticeably smaller and lighter than the OEM unit but I didn't bother to weigh it before installation. It fires up fast and on a single turn of the key every time.
If you replace the starter don't forget to replace the bushing that the end shaft rides on in the tram case. It is a job, but if worn over time will not support starter shaft as it should.
well guys: i did a little bit research (background: i`ve so save 10kg every winter/hibernation period, at the moment i`ve saved 1.8kg with lighter brake-discs and 3.5kg with a Lifepo4 battery, so i need some additional sources for potential weight savings).
Std. starter is ~6kg, 996GT3 starter is round about 3.7kg. So a ~2kg weight saving is expected.
A GT3 starter is available for round about 150,-€ - but not with brand BOSCH. What do you think guys? Is BOSCH necessary or just a nice to have? I do not see any fancy features in a starter, to grab to the upper price-levels...

I ultimately went with Bosch because the old one was solid for 20+ years. Not sure about the reliability of the other ones. Worst case is that the car won't start and you will have to swap out the starter (a bit of PITA, but not too bad). Even worse case scenario is if the starter takes a dive while you're away from home.
