Default Is rust a problem?

Hey everyone, I've been searching for a 911 for about 6 months and I'm finding nice cars that still have rust issues with the older (78-89) cars and of course I'm paranoid about the iceberg effect with rust. I already had to give away a 68' Chevelle for that very reason.

Is rust as much an issue with the 964s as it is with the earlier cars? I know any car can rust but it seems to be a running joke with the earlier cars, especially pre-78. I'm not in the position to deal with that right now as much as I want to build a car again, I'd rather get a real solid car up front and start there, even if it means spending a lot more money now......rather than later!

Thank you.
Steve

I think you just answered your own question. Rust is expensive to repair, and if you can actually see some rust, chances are there's more rust that you can't see. Buy the best car you can. Spending more up front is actually more cost effective

But is it as much a problem with the 964 as it is with the earlier gen cars?

A decent percentage of 964s (and 993s) are going to have rust on the bottom corners of the front windscreen aperture.... They just do.

on the 964s the windshield base seems to be pretty common. extensive rust doesn't seem common
not compared to the older cars at least

I was very worried about rust repair on mine when the typical windshield bubble formed, to the point where it pushed me down the path of a glass out respray. Well wouldn't you know it, that bubble was all their was. A small patch panel and that was that. Don't let a little body work scare you off, just be smart about it.

I have a canadian car, C2 so it was never used during winter. I do have rust at the bottom of the windshield like they all do, but nowhere else, at all. Im amazed how rust free it is. These cars, if taken car of, should be pretty rust resistant. Have any prospect looked at properly and you won't have issues.

I have nightmares about this problem, and am even reluctant to wash my 1990 C2 that has never seen a snowflake or salt crystal...but why does this even happen with a galvanized body with a seemingly intact front window gasket?

Rust is an issue in older cars ( pre1976 ).You should know in 1976 Porsche started galvanizing body panels and that really minimized the problem .In addition 964s had a very robust undercoating and other corrosion resistant treatments.

Unless car had some unusual environment through its life ,IE Salt environments. You would not expect a big serious issues .Windshield bubbles may be there.

Look car over carefully on a lift and you can tell a lot about its history and condition

I replaced my windshield on a 1990 C2 a couple weeks ago. It's always been a texas car, driven almost daily for last 17 years... No rust under windshield gasket at all... I was careful not to nick the paint when removing the old caulking... Probably over aggressive scraping the cause of most rusting around the windshield.
So far no rust anywhere on car. This is a keeper.

Mine had rust bubbles under the windshield seal. Can't let that stay:

^^ This. Many 964s have by now had at least one windshield replacement and of course this is not often disclosed. Aggressive scraping to remove the old adhesive and lack of treating and prepping the area prior to install of new class has led to many a rust-bubble and more on both the 964 & 993 cars.

Excellent point.. check the car thoroughly as I have seen 964s with rusty fenders, rockers and front pan. However, typically on a C4 that's been used year round.

Good luck with your search!
