Default Rear window install

Well been a while since I’ve posted. I had been struggling with the rear quarter window trim piece. I finally got them to stay in but then had trouble getting the windows in correctly too far forward thanks to some great Rennlist members and their good hints got them in this am where I’m happy. After getting my rear window out of storage I discovered the tabs for the defrost grid off. I tried the repair with the fancy defrost grid glue but still didn’t have continuity in the grid. As I only drive Talia in the summer I decided to not replace the window and just reinstall it as is. I did run the wires for the high taillight thru the seal and install the rear window myself this morning also though I hadn’t planned on it 😳. I’m sure I can get it back out with some help if needed

Talia is coming along nicely. It is a long road but the finish work albeit time consuming is the most gratifying.

Those tabs are so fragile. Any tug on the harness or even removing it can do quick damage. I recall learning that the hard way on my SC. IIRC I soldered it and was able to make a connection although it took many tries and I think that was a fluke.

I am curious John. Are you going to do a final "finishing" polish on it when you are done with assembly, or do you have other plans? It is hard to tell from the pictures of how fine the finish is currently. I am just curios. I plan to do my car myself in about 18 months after I retire and just wanted to know your thoughts on a massive DIY project.

I still have a lot of buffing to do some parts like bumper covers are dam hard to hold unless mounted also I have limited storage room

I also discovered the older paint or the parts I painted first buff better. It’s a huge undertaking frustrating but oh so rewarding to do every bit by myself 😎👍

John, you may be on to something. I remember there was a paint guy that I talked to when i painted my first car with Imron about 30 years ago. He also suggested waiting 2-3 months to allow the paint to come to a full hardness before doing a final polish. He was right as i suspect you are discovering. I think paint reaches its "cured state" lets say 97-98% in a matter of a few days, but takes some time (depending on the hardening additives that have to cook off during the drying process) to reach 100%. I talked to one shop and noticed that they had several cars that came out of the paint and cure booths (used specialized lights) and they were setting in the sun. He said some time in the sun (a couple of days) does wonders for getting the finish to gas-off and fully harden.

You did the Imron route as well. I painted my first 911 back in the late 70's using Imron. Nasty stuff but makes for a rock hard finish once cured. Fresh paint is soft and takes a special skill to polish. I was never one for touching fresh paint only a few weeks old and prefer to wait if I can but a pro can do wonders with the right process. I just had this bumper painted for a friend and it came out perfect although I had to be very careful installing it as it can easily be marred.
