Greetings everyone! And congrats to all recently purchased 964 Targa owners! Your toys are absolutely beautiful! I am quite jealous
I regretfully sold my 89 930 years ago and have not been back visiting the forum for quite sometime. However, I have a little more time these days and am ready to jump back again into these wonderful air-cooled machines.
Currently, I have an eyes on a distant blue 964 C2 Targa, as I no longer can handle any 930 offers these days. I will see how the new endeavor on the 964 goes...
I've come back and read over all the post in this tread.
Lots of discussions of how rare the Targa is and why its value should appreciate at a greater percentage than Coupes.
There is at least one post of someone actually buying a Targa recently but unless I missed it no actual price is mentioned. Why?
Wouldn't an actual current purchase or sale price help to determine the current market value?
I believe the reasons there are so few sales of nice 964 Targas, besides being rare , is the people who own them are recognizing that will start to have collector value soon ,nd want o have hard assets .This perception started when the current 991 Targa was released with its retro style of the original and as a limited model.
I have talked to some PNA people and dealers who expressed this opinion.
What better way to make an investment and provide so much fun.
These still are cheap now you can find a nice one
I just sold a nice lower mileage 90 C2 targa for $40,500. Given the response I was probably a little under market. If I was to relist I'd ask $45k, less valuable than a coupe. Folks have made same argument about targa's Vs coupe's for the earlier 911's as well, has not happened with the 69-73 market either. The soft window targa's are probably = coupe but not worth more.
Sold my MY92 Targa with 60k miles last year for mid $60's. Yes, that's a mint [green]. If it was a coupe I wouldn't have sold it but I believe it to be worth $10k+ more.

Phil
Thank you for the numbers.
I think you are absolutely correct in your analysis.
Phil,
Once again, congratulations...be careful you don't go down the slippery slope.
I've owned a 964 Coupe and a 964 Targa simultaneously before. Both great in their own ways. I had to sell my coupe to get a GT3. My C2 Targa actually felt faster, but was as fun as the coupe. Open top weather here in Colorado makes a Targa damn nice.
Last of the handbuilt Targa's, low production and it's still a 911. Appreciating!
I looked all over the country for 6 months back in 2013 before I found this one. Like damn near every 964 out there, it needed the "treatment" (suspension, motor mounts, cat by pass, wong chip, etc)
Mine is not for sale, but if it was, most of the numbers being tossed around here wouldn't close the deal.
Love my targa. I started the process looking for a coupe but when the right car came along it was a targa. No regrets. I think the coupe and the targa are great looking cars each for different reasons, but that is a personal thing. As for price, that is driven by supply and demand. The coupe is the first choice for most people which drives its price up higher. That being said, if the coupe prices continue to rise the targa and vert prices should follow. I don't think that targa prices will meet or surpass coupe prices though.Dan
