Default Oil gauge pics - help please

Not sure if my oil pressure gauge is calibrated properly, ie, it inicates less than zero when ignition on, and never quite hits 5 bar on high revs.

The pic below shows the needle with ignition completely off. The yellow line is where the needle shows with ignition on, but without turning hte engine over. Comparisons when you guys have time.

Cheers

In my car it's te same.

There is no power on the gauge with ignition aff, and when you switch it on, things will sett to a zero or beginning point.

No problem.

Arjan

I know it in't a problem. My point is the gauge is BELOW zero with power on. I think this may be why my gauge reads a low oil pressure. Unfortunately, the hammer doesn't give an oil pressure reading with which to calibrate the gauge.

OK, John...

From my normal viewpoint, the needle positions are exactly as you indicate. BUT, if I look straight at the gauge to eliminate any parallax, the needle is spot on the mark when the ignition is on.

Hey John,

No time to snap and upload a picture. But, I can tell you that my needle is at about the same point with the ignition off, and well above the 0 mark when the ignition is on--it's at least a quarter of the way between the 0 and 1. Which likely explains why the pressure is so apt to read 5 bars or greater.

Interesting. My guage runs at about 2 in idle after it warms and etc. It also runs a strong 4 sometimes 5 when getting on it. Is this too high?

On mine it stays pretty much exactly on the line.

Randall

the reason I asked this question is becuase I figured that its just a needle stuck on the end of a shaft. If its not in the right place, the reading is a bit meaningless. I seem to be under-reading - ie, I NEVER get 5 bar and with hot oil, it idles at 1 bar or just below. I want to calibrate my gauge so I get a TRUE representation of oil pressure.

I suppose the important position is how close to the zero mark it is with ignition on, engine off. Mine reads less than zero, which could explain my low pressure readings.

Doug, we are talking about with ignition on not the engine running.

John, I am not sure if its really meant to ever be at 5 bar (thus it being an upper limit?). As I recall, under normal driving mine would be at 4.5 ish max, but never noticed it hitting 5.

Mine hits 5, but not all the time. I am not at all worried about it though as long as it displays the behaviour one would expect and I don't get an oil light lit, it is not worth worrying about.

If I look straight on the gauge, and not from above/driving position the reading is on the zero mark with the ignition on. From 3000 revs and above the needl is locked on 5 bar.
