Default RS carpet: rear shelf lumps?

How does the factory RS achieve such a smooth finish for the rear shelf carpet overlay? How did you guys deal with the lumps? Any photos?

For a starting point, the rear seat brackets have been removed on my car.

Many thanks!

Interesting. I thought the RS didn't have any foam under there. I gather the RS also used foam to fill the gap between the transmission tunnel and shifter console. Thanks Thomas!

Best way is to fill in with foam and use a thin shelf of plywood.

Just on the top and drape the carpet over that, or an L shape similar to the stock deck?

Many thanks!

The piece of Carpet that drapes down from the rear screen is fairly stiff, I left my piece draped over a banister rail for a couple of days to take shape then I only glued it at the very bottom of the screen, only the top three inches of carpet. after it had settled I then did a line of spray glue across the firewall around the middle of you back height and voila, no creases and you can't tell the shelf is lumpy. Ok so it'll move if you lean on it but your not getting in the back anyway especially with the pole position seats fitted. Hope this helps a little, Jim.

no foam in the back of an rs anywhere, the rs used the whole sound deadening from the c2/c4 for the footwells and centre console though.

Are you sure? There are two pieces from what I remember. One above the tranny tunnel on the rear wall. And one on top where the rear wiper motor sits if you have one. Aside from these parts it is just metal. I was about to buy these parts but ended up doing them myself.

I could be wrong but the original rs i took notes from before doing mine had nothing where the wiper was for sure as you could see it sagging after a the guy cleaning it rested his elbow on it! These are 20 year old cars though and who know whether there was a story....not sure why you'd need a bit for the end of the tranny tunnel?

It is a big pit/hollow in the rear wall where it meets the tranny tunnel.

The euro PET lists part number 96455623902 with "Carrera RS" as the model. Same part as the coupe.

Hmm... I always thought the RS had no sound deadening, but I guess it's more like a 50% reduction.

Do you know how the console sits on a cup car or N/GT? Is there a gap between it and the tunnel or is the console different?

I think it sits "high" as on a C2. I used a 10 mm foam under the carpet around the console to make it sit a littlbe better with almost no gap.

I found the same as Thomas but tackled it a slightly different way be leaving the original soundproofing on the top of the tunnel before fitting the carpet so that the console would fit without a gap.

Regarding the humps on the rear shelf I too used a piece of foam to smooth them out. I used the original piece that I took out as a template. The new closed cell foam is much lighter than the original soundproofing. Here's the thread I did on my install:

Here's a picture. I filled out the well at he back and supported in the front. Used nut inserts to hold the plywood down. Then glued the carpet on, except for the corners were I still can undo the plywood. Looks top notch
