Default Emergency Release Cable

I have a 1990 C4 that does not have the emergency release cable for the trunk and engine lid.

I don’t know what year it became standard but I want to retrofit the cables in my car. Has anyone done this?

The part number is the same for both the trunk and engine lid 964.512.521.00

It seems pretty straightforward but I was wondering if anyone had some tips.

Thanks,
Brad

Bayside it is very easy to do. Does your front tub have the 1/2 inch hole with the rubber plug in it? Make sure that your latches have the two screw mounted releases so that you can provide the added cable. I have been saved by the release cable twice already, once on a friends car!

Thanks Kevin, I will check.

Is the rear prepared for the extra cable too?

I recall reading that the 90 has a spring loaded latch on the engine deck lid. If the cable snaps, the decklid pops open.

However just for that belts and suspenders feeling, I added a cable that runs to the LH taillight assembly. If necessary, I can unscrew the light housing to get at the cable.

The rear cable goes through to your tailight housing, left side.

NO, if the cable breaks, you're out of luck for a "quick and easy" solution.

You would have to remove your muffler and the engine sheet metal to get to the latch...which is no easy feat either.

BUY the cable kits and look at your latches, front and rear where your existing "regular" release cables go...you will see an appropriation for the emergency cables.

BTW, you can probably make your own cables a bit cheaper...go to a bike shop and buy a brake cable, then go to Lowe's/Home Depot and buy the crimp connectors for looping cable over to form the release handle and crimp them together.

You might have $5 invested?? Just think, you can get all "crafty" and such, dip the cable in that liquid tool rubber stuff to make it vinyl coated -or- put some colored tubing over it...fancy-fancy!
