Spacer must go this way. Otherwise the spacer will bind the two pulleys together.

I had just recently did an oil change (less than 500 miles ago) and filled her up with Mobil 1. I recently learned that the Mobil 1 does not have enough zinc content for older/aircooled cars. I would like to drain it out and replace it with Amsoil 10w40. Can I do so without changing my oil filter as it is quite new?

Don't drain your oil. Just buy the zddp as an additive and throw it in...You can buy it at Amazon. Run through that oil till spring and next oil change make the switch to brad penn or whatever oil works for you.

Which Mobil 1 product did you put in the car?

Due to my location (far east) shipping something like that from Amazon wouldn't be cost effective and time consuming. And we don't have anything like what you posted where I am. The only additives I can find locally are from LiquiMoly and X1-R. Would I be doing any harm/good to my engine by putting LiquiMoly Ceratec in?

Hmmm, so all the washers and spacers were on right; he thinks the issue might be the alternator bearings because as soon as he loosened the belts, the noise subsided significantly, which makes him think the bearings on the alternator are going.

I did a quick search; on an original-esque alternator, does it make sense to replace the bearings (possible from what I understand), have the thing rebuilt, or buy a brand new one?

Wrong viscosity, Mobil 1 15w50 for a 964/993 is correct.

Bearings are cheap. Check my C4 light refurb thread.

John, your thread definitely deserves a shoutout. Fantastic stuff.

Question:

Sonnen prices the new alternator at $889.

There is a "Core" of 445.

Does that mean the cost of a new alternator is 889-445 = $444?

David-
This place in Sac does an excellent job on rebuilding alternators:
https://www.google.com/search?q=capi...&client=safari
Capital City recently rebuilt 2, 993 alts for friends and rebuilt a Toyota truck alt for me. All well done. The 993 alt rebuilds ran $150. I know it's a little drive for you but hey take the baby on a drive time nap!

Im afraid its actually 889+445 core, or at least, thats how it usually is. However, if you're buying new (or is it rebuilt?), there should not be a core charge.

I had my alternator rebuilt locally using high quality bearings for ~$100. It's been working flawlessly since the rebuild.

Thanks Mike. I'll see what my wrench gets back to me with regarding a local rebuild, otherwise maybe we will make a trip up to Sac with the baby. If we do, I'll drop you a note, maybe we can swing by your place.
