REDTEK Engine Build

Also, since Nick can do totally custom cams I wondered if instead of a cup profile I should ask him to do one which specifically boosted bottom end and mid range torque? I've been told the cup cam boosts power everywhere but really i'm just interested in a fat torque curve. Is it the case that the cup cam provides best power at the bottom end as well so might as well just stick with it or would a custom design provide more bottom end torque?
or maybe with a varioram intake you could ...

Hey Paul thanks for the pic!! Good to see her again! Are you getting your car done too? Did you see if they'd started on it yet?

Hi Jack,
I'm not sure what progress has been made on your's yet, they may well be on with it. I know Nick's had a few unexpected bodywork problems with a white SC which he's desperate to get out.
Frank's engine might well be back in by now, they hoped to get it done today if all went well.
Mine (below) is in for 1st service after complete 3.8 rebuild earlier in the summer. See thread So It Begins if you'd like to see what's been done.
I know I've said it already (Nick said you were thinking about painting your car) the colour is amazing, don't, I could dive into it!
Good luck,
Paul

I think i am in love with black 964s and your's Paul is my fave! Looks lovely. That said, Mr.pe's blue is rather yummy.
I fell in love with Jack's today, I can't wait to see his progress. I was never (ever, ever, ever) a fan of D90's but I have to admit they do look great in black so I'm back-pedaling a bit.

So was picking up BB and bumped into this gorgeous thing. Ps. Don't know if anyone has said this before but wow that paint looks electric! Then I spotted this lovely looking bottom end. Apparently the P&Cs are in fine fettle as are the cams as it turns out.

Right, am going up to Redtek on Saturday to check on progress and agree a final spec. As Frank said Nick told me the engine is in remarkably good condition!!! The smoke was mainly due to the oil "scavenge rings" or something like that, forgot what he said exactly.. they sit below the rings on the pistons apparently? In any case pistons and bores are in great condition, he said that unusually the valves are also in brilliant shape, so much so he is not going to replace them, which apparently is quite rare. The big ends were a bit worn though so those are being renewed. Will post more info and pics on Saturday..

Sounds like probably the oil control rings were the problem, anyway that's great news, let us know how you get on. Got me wondering if I might fit a rebuild in for mine between now and Spa.....

Exactly!!! the oil control rings.... never heard about these before, anyone know what they look like?

Oil control rings are three layers usually from what I've seen; a thin ring top and bottom and a sort of corrugated ring sandwiched in the middle. They are the main barrier for oil getting sucked from the crankcase into the combustion chamber on the intake stroke, the other two rings are the compression rings which stop the expanding gasses after combustion getting into the crank case.
