Black-betty, I'm 46 years old, I've been around Porsches my entire life. I saw Mark Donohue win the first IROC race at Riverside when I was 6 years old. I've also been driving and modifying German cars since I was old enough to drive so to call me a fan boy at this stage of the game is a little absurd. People have been lowering, widening, painting and customizing cars since cars have been on the road, so to throw trendy buzzwords around at grown men who have as much love and passion for the marque as anybody is just plain ignorant.

I've had the benefit of driving my car stock and as it sits now and I can tell you it's wwwaaayyyy more fun to drive now than it was with 16's, balloon tires and mushy US spec suspension. Either way, you guys can talk all the geometry bull**** you want but at the end of the day, until you've actually driven a car setup like Brian's or mine and the many others out there, and I'll say it again, you have no clue.

If posting uneducated, derogatory comments to other members is the way some of you guys act around here, you can expect it right back, much like Big Mike, I can talk **** with the best of 'em but you don't see me posting in threads I have no interest in. Mike chose to post, Mike got a response. End of story. Personally, I think putting Boxster wheels on a 964 is about as lame as it gets but you never would have known that if Mike hadn't opened his mouth.

So where are we meeting for crumpets?

I spend time reading on here but almost never post (obviously) and it's amazing when a good thread turns into a disaster. Here is the reality, most of us build cars for ourselves, to our taste, budget, desires, etc. To outwardly bash someone's car is ugly at best (and I always question if you would say the same thing face to face, but that's another topic). If you don't like it, then just move on to another thread or start your own, but there is no "right and wrong way" to build a Porsche. Dr. Porsche and his engineers would probably think 90% of the cars of the members here are screwed up, but if the owner likes it then it's perfect. If you build a car for someone else then their opinion should probably count for something. If you are building it for yourself, build whatever makes you happy. How about we all just recognize a love for Porsche and be glad these cars aren't sitting in a field somewhere rusting away.

In the end it's the owner's car, they can do with it as they please. However, I think its a valid observation that sometimes these purely stylistic exercises often evolve into caricatures of some original form. In the 80's low aspect ratio tires and larger wheels became the norm for performance upgrades. This eventually lead, imo, to the ridiculous 24" and higher diameter wheels. Start with something that looks a certain way because of the way its designed to function, then eventually it evolves into something that only resembles the original in a cartoonish manner. Same with getting the wheel arch to sit between an exposed outer rim surface and a tire stretched way out of functional performance parameters. Starts with a little extra stretch by a hill climber or autoXer to get just that last bit of performance, then transmogrifies into something, that in comparison, seems like a grotesque over wrought rendition of the original idea.

Hot rodding is a worthy pursuit in and of itself. If the owner wants to porpoise down the highway as compromise to some ideal aesthetic...then have at it. Just don't be surprised when the form follows function crowd comments.

I'm not surprised...just bummed that a great build and an epic trip turned into a bash session.

If we are not careful, there will be as many comments about the trashiing of this thread as there have been about the build and the following story.
i hope we can move on now!

Hi Todeshandler, can I ask what size tyres you used on the 17's and what the wheel widths were if you remember? I've got some ruf 17's i want to put tyres on, they came with some cheap 215 and 245 (cant remenber the aspect ratio). Great car and story

Yeah Max, I heard. I've had about 6 sets of H&R coils on various cars prior to my 964 and was always a fan but the AH Exclusives are something special. I did 600 miles on them to LA and back after installing my Pole Positions and had a blast. I couldn't wait to drive my car again every time I parked it!

While there, I also rode in Brian's S4, the same car I had before I got the 964 and was equally impressed with them on that car. I think you'll be very happy!

Compared to other coils I've had the H&Rs are great and the price isn't too bad either

Chris, they are AH exclusive H&R coilovers. Stiffer spring rates, revalved and so forth. Get in contact with Rotiform for a set!

Nothing other than the obvious, I've generally known cab owners to be the kinder, gentler type that's all, lol.

I think you may find that I never called you a 'fan boy'.

Maybe, but if you were truly after a performance ride you wouldn't have it stretched.
You'd perhaps run a 17" or 18" with correct tyres. If you use the search button you'll find lots of info on great set ups.
However as the obvious shows your car's set up is for aesthetics not performance. Each to their own.

So well done on slamming your car - it definitely is a looker.

As you will have noticed. This forum is full of very insightful, helpful and professional members. When we all hear conclusively that stretched tyres is a great road/ track set up I'm sure we'll all follow suit.
Until then I suggest you jump in to a very tightly setup 964 on recommended tyre sizes and aggressive geo and see if may be we may be right.

Then again, if it's just about the look of stretched tyres then right on

Well I'll take a guess that Mike doesn't care too much about aesthetics and thus chose wheel sizes and tyres that perform well.

Hello! Your age and time around Porsches has no relevance to you taking more interest in the the aesthetics of a 964 as opposed to it's performance.
Mind you the longer you're around a brand the more likely they're philosophy rubs off...
