Default Oil Circulation Diagram?

Since I have my oil tank out and replacing a lot of the hoses, I'm wondering now how the oil flows through all of the components.

I just spend 30 minutes on Google and couldn't find one for the 964. Not sure if it is the same as the 80's 911.

Adrian's "Companion" book has a good detailed flow diagram that I was viewing last night. I'm at work and have no access to it now though. Perhaps someone else can view.

Doh! I have the book 20 feet from me. Thanks.

Here is what I have and really need to know what is the INLET and OUTLET at the oil filter.

Green - after filtration
Red - before filtration
Yellow - oil cooler (bypass)

The line from under the HE to the oil filter is the outflow from the motor. This flow then gets filtered and makes its way back to the thermostat on that big braided line at the top of the fenderwell. The exposed hardline at the base of the fenderwell that runs from the tank to the bottom front of the motor is the inflow to the motor.

Red is before filtration, green is after.

question, why is there no guard in my right rear fender well to protect the oil tank and the oil lines? Should there be? I see one in other fender wells.

Great diagram above. Just to add that the parts marked 24,26,29,28 make up the feed from the oil tank to the oil pump and part 54 is the outlet from the scavenge pump that then feeds up into the oil filter housing.

Aside from the theoretical oil flow of course there is the actual oil flow which is more like this

Thanks.

It seems backwards to me. I would think that the filtration should take place between the tank and the engine.

Your instinct is sound, the 993 added a filter between the tank and pump. It is not unheard of for a dirty tank to ruin a newly built engine as grot is suck in and pumped round the engine.

Is there a retro fit for the 964?

It can be done, but I think you'd need to make it part of an engine build as you need to pull some plugs from the oil galleries in the case to fit the oil filter console. BTW the 964T has a similar setup. Basically they just blocked up the ports in the case that were used for the engine mounted oil cooler on earlier cars when they made the 964, and then they opened them up and used them again on the 964T and 993 this time for the oil filter console for the second oil filter. From what I read the main concern for the 993 was to keep the hydraulic tappets/lifters happy.
