Harry

Thank you, I would have ordered the extra small based on numbers on package shown on GeorgeKs' post

I did the urethane ones shown in this thread and am not happy with the fit, they just are not right!

Harry,

Many thanks for the details... I got 8 of the ones you described. They will go on in Jan.

May as well have a few spares laying around for the cost of them.

The integral bushing of the C4 droplink is in much better shape than the dust boots. Probably higher quality rubber. Strange there is no grease in the ball joints of the drop links... I'm sure adding grease won't harm anything.

Someone pointed out the ball joints are lined in plastic, so I probably shouldn't have used a petroleum-based lubricant to regrease them.

They definitely had some type of orignal grease in there when I opened them up.

Me I think. My post (#29) actually said not "moly-based" grease. There was plenty of "other" grease in mine and I added a bit more lithium-based during re-assembly.

Turbo (or anybody else who can check),

Can you tell us what dimension the boots on the balljoints are?
I think it may be possible to replace those too.

Not sure if anybody has done so already.

Morning All,

Since I never got any information back on my questions regarding replacement boots I started to look around my self and came up with the following measurements on my 964 parts:

Top X Height X Base

Swaybar 13 mm X 15 mm X 26 mm, used boot #1

Ball Joint 19 mm X 17 mm X 37 mm, used boot # 3

Steering Rods 16 mm X 16 mm X 29 mm, used boot #4

I ordered a trade pack kit from http://www.balljointboots.co.uk/

He was quick and have been selling these boots for more than 15 years and rubber should be of good quality. ( his words not mine..but looks good )

I even ordered the 9.13103 part from Energy Suspension Parts as earlier recommended but have not used that part...yet

Maybe it helps someone else in their hunt for rubber boots

Cheers

PW

So just to recap some of the information:
Below are some drivers that successfully used some kind of boot on their car.

Tie rod ends:

GeorgeK has replaced his tie rod end boots with the M 110 boot from http://www.sfascrima.ch.
The replacement boot has metal top and bottom ring to secure it, and a dimension of 24mm dia large hole, 11mm dia small hole and 19mm tall. This boot must stretch a bit.

P356GT measured the tie rod end as 16mm top dia, 29mm as bottom dia and 16mm tall. He ordered boot #4 from http://www.balljointboots.co.uk/

Ball joints:

P356GT measured the ball joints as 19mm top dia, 37mm as bottom dia and 17mm tall. He ordered boot #3 from http://www.balljointboots.co.uk/

Drop links C4 (and M030 I believe):

On the C4 only one side has a rubber boot. The other side has a bushing that is integrated into the actual part itself.

Harry Apps noted to not use a moly based grease. He used boot "small" which he got from http://www.balljointboot.co.uk/
Dimensions are 11-15mm for the top hole, 25-30mm for the bottom hole and 24mm tall.

A size of rubber boot that has been used by a 964 driver in the UK is: top hole = 10mm, bottom hole = 25mm, uncompressed height = 24mm
More info here: http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?p=737131#737131

Drop links C2:

Vandit has replaced the boots with some replacement parts from Energy Suspension, but they need some modification: to cut out a part for the rod itself. Nothing major.
They can be found here: http://www.energysuspensionparts.com...Dust-Boots.asp
The part number is 13003.

P356GT measured the ball joints as 13mm top dia, 26mm as bottom dia and 15mm tall. He ordered boot #1 from http://www.balljointboots.co.uk/

Alternatively they can be replaced with rubber boots from one of the other suppliers.

General points:
1/ Get rubber boots with metal clips to hold them in place
2/ Lube the joint, but use the right lube: lithium for joints with a plastic cup and a moly based grease for joints with a metal cup.

If I missed anything just correct me.

Note that two of the suppliers listed here have a website that is very similar.

What would I do?

Ideally I would get all my boots from http://www.balljointboot.co.uk/

Tie rod ends: the extra small size; 10.5-14mm top hole, 24-28mm bottom hole and 20mm tall

Drop links: the small size; 11-15mm top hole, 25-30mm bottom hole and 24mm tall

Ball joint: large top hole medium; 15-19mm top hole, 30-38mm bottom hole and 26.5mm tall

Question to the audience: Since I only don't have the extra small size, as I would ideally like for the tie rod ends, and I have some small size boots, can I use the small size instead? The only potential issue I can see is that the one I would use is 24mm tall rather than 20mm tall. But it would get compressed anyway I presume.

My boots on my swaybar links are shot, and http://www.balljointboot.co.uk/ only sells their replacement boots in Europe. Is there a supplier of boots in the USA? google's not my friend today.

Just FYI: I thought their international shipping was very reasonable.

There must have been a policy change because they replied to my email yesterday that they only supply within Europe.

they can no longer get the extra small but they claim the small will probably still fit the tie rod ends
