Default Decat pipe

So, I have a 1993 c2 with a G pipe but I want a decat pipe instead.
I know it's strictly speaking not legal as such as the car is registered post August 92 but how difficult will it be to get the car mot'd ??

As well, not instead

(sorry - not sure about the MOT but I believe it is an instant MOT fail on a 1993 car)

Technically, the UK MOT rules now say that ANY car originally supplied with a cat, regardless of year, must have a cat fitted. That means ALL 964s (regardless of year). If you get a Dansk de-cat pipe, it looks just like a cat from the outside and has the O2 sensor fitted. An MOT tester is not going to unbolt your exhaust and look inside...so as long as the car passes the emissions test (which mine did last time) you'll be OK. However, if you get the straight pipe version of the de-cat, a picky MOT tester might fail the car without testing the emissions.

But did the early ones have one fitted/ was it an option?

Regs only changed in January I think

However I think you could spec your car without a CAT pre 93, so how would they know what it was delivered wih?

Exactly Now when it comes to my next exhaust system - I may just have to ask my MOT man to turn a blind eye like my missing indictors...

As far as I'm aware it was standard on all UK supplied 964s but Gary could be right that the first owner could spec it without one. After all Porsche are famous for their 'delete' options.

I'm sure all these new MOT regs are going to be seen as a PITA by most testers. They could spend more time checking databases than they do checking the cars so most will carry on as normal! Of course.....there will always be one jobsworth tester that will cause problems that you want to avoid!

What is the general consensus on our cars being able to pass the actual tailpipe emissions test w/ a bypass in place (like Frank's experience)? Is it the norm?

What are people's views as to whether or not this is ethical?
I fear I'll come across as very pompous (sorry!) but it doesn't seem very fair to our collective grandchildren to leave them the legacy of the unburnt hydrocarbons when my understanding is that you can get the same (or better?) power gain from bypassing the primary silencer, the only resultant 'pollution' being that glorious noise...

Cows produce more CO2 than cars globally. (not strictly relevant to your comment on hydrocarbons, but its a factoid I like!)

I have to admit, a decat doesn't bother me a bit. I bet the carbon footprint of a building a new car is more than running a 964 without a cat, and no one would give you a hard time for buying a new car.
