Iphone dock in the ashtray
#16
Got my dock through yesterday
removed the metal surround in the ashtray and did a trial fit
need to remove the two prongs so it can come as far forward as possible and also need to tilt it forwards slightly as when the phone is in it it tilts back slightly which hits the heater ***.
should work perfectly though

Right so set to it this afternoon
Took it apart, and cut the base down as thin as possible
then glued the board into the base
checked the angle with the phone in place
and glued it to the tray (i had already ground those prongs flush)
checked clearance when closed
all good
here it is mounted
thought i would check that it is all fuctioning before cutting the hole for the wire and it doesnt work
it charges and the line out socket works but no sound is coming from it.
i wish i checked it worked before i started
New one ordered from another company and will try that.
there isnt enough room to put a small piece of plastic over the top as planned to give extra support for the phone so i will just streche some suede over it.

Interesting. My car's ashtray doesn't look like that or is that large.
I don't know if that dock would able to keep the phone in place w/ the way i'm on the throttle and brakes.
Moot point for me however, as I recently gutted the car of all stereo wiring w/ the exception of the speakers.

time to make one with new lightening connector for the latest gen iPods and iPhones. You can use the lightening to usb connector and integrate a phone holder for it

Yeah ash tray pulled out fully.
My pioneer is multi pin too not USB.
Got an extension cable on the way so ill see how that goes. Rework it into the dock.

Looks like a great solution.
The "flip down" ashtray in my '93 RSA (which looks different from the ones pictured so far) takes a lot of fiddling to stay closed once someone opens it, so I always leave it closed.
I installed a Sony headunit that has a built-in "garage" to hold an iPod, and it works great. It also has bluetooth streaming, etc. Highly recommended for those who want a clean iPod installation.

Has anyone as yet devised a way to fit a double din unit into a 964.
I have a spare one that I would love to utilise.
My iPod can then sit happily ever after in the glovebox

I posted this in another thread. My 1990 and 1991 have a different type of ashtray on the underside center.
I use a Kenu airframe (for iPhone6) or Kenu airframe+ for (iPhone6 plus). It grabs on to the lip of the ashtray and perfectly floats the phone above my center console. Works great. My iPod Classic is in my glovebox with all my music. Then I wired in a Lighting charger for my iPhone and use bluetooth to connect that to my Alpine head unit. It works great.
