There is another step in Adrian's procedure where you disconnect the selector lever from the shifter cable. That is straightforward, its just a little circlip holding a pin. You then remove some surrounding brackets so that the cable ends up completely free of the chassis. It doesn't match the illustration in Adrian's book but its obvious what you have to do. You can't have anything connecting the chassis to the engine or transmission obviously.

Remove the orange flexible heater duct hoses completely. That will give you access on the right side of the car to remove the starter ground strap and starter connection.

Words of wisdom from Steve. Hang axels upward so they are already out of the way before the engine drops. Use a coat hanger or some wire.

The two transmission fluid lines that must be disconnected are on the LEFT side of the car above the rear axel. You need two 19mm wrenches. It helps to have one wrench be thinner. Steve somehow worked his magic on the lower connection with an adjustable wrench. This is where he bailed me out of a jam that would have sent me to sears or to the auto store for more wrenches.

Steve and I removed the cat and the secondary muffler as it something you will probably want to do after the engine drop and removing the cat does free up easy access to one item you have to disconnect, the orange rubber exhaust flex tube.

Instructions on how to remove the cat and secondary muffler are here from my Yet Another Valve Adjustment thread.

Here is where we placed the 2'x2' platform. This worked for the drop. Afterward I determined this was a bit too far forward. I could tell the center of gravity of the engine is a bit further back. ATV jack should be back a few inches.

Here is the detail on the top side tiptronic electrical connection that you must disconnect after dropping the engine about 6 inches. Don't forget about pulling the throttle cable out of the center tunnel during the early part of the drop!

Once again a big THANK YOU to StevePaa for the invaluable assistance. Rennlisters rock! I now have to figure out how to pay this forward.

That's me on the left and Steve on the right.

I finally found the link as the one I bookmarked kept going back to the homepage
Looks like you don't need it now as you have done a top job. Might be handy as a reference when putting it back in though.

Anyone that knows just how high from the ground the bottom of the engine needs to be to be able to slide the engine out if you dont have access to a lift?

Flacor,

Height depends on whether you pull the bumper off or not. I believe it's in the 36" range with the bumper on.

Happy to be corrected by someone who knows for certain.

Ricardo - Congratulations! By the way, I have never disconnected my throttle cable at the pedal. I've always disconnected it at the engine-side throttle. But its good to see you can do it either way.

Ricardo and I had a good time doing his drop. It was a pleasure helping him.

One more hint for everyone after the first 1 inches of separation, pretend you have a hoop that the engine/tranny has to pass through and check every area of the engine to be sure all connections are free.

Then do it again.

Then do it again at 2, 3 and 6 inches.

Congratulation Ricardo, the first drop is always the best. I did this 3 times this past winter and learned something new each time.
I agree with Bob, i alway disconnected the throttle cable at the engine, much easier this way.

Good luck with the rest of your project.
