Default Battery Tray Angst - Pleas Help?

Guys, Guys...

I had to replace the battery today in my 'owned for a month' 964.

Bit surprised to see so much rust in the battery tray, but then I find a tube dangling just above the rustiest area? could this be the culprit??

I've attached a photo, the tube comes out of the N/S Wing just above the battery but goes no-where, any Ideas where this should be going or am i on the wrong tracks completely?

Many Thanks

That tube is there to vent the battery gases outside. Looks like yours wasn't hooked up properly. I would get the rust fixed soon, you don't want it taking over.

Thanks. Replaced the old battery with a Bosch, will that have a vent hole to connect the tube to?

Re the rust can I treat it or are you thinking cut out and weld?

If the rust is just on the surface you will be able to get away with giving it a good wire brushing, treat it with some rust killer and then paint it.

If it is very flakey, tap it with a screwdriver, if chunks come off or you end up with a hole get a patch welded in.

You may also want to ascertain why it is rusty. Has a battery leaked in the past, or is water getting in? Check seals.

You will have to keep on top of all these littele jobs.

Cheers

I encountered something similar on my car.

I haven't taken the time to address it, but I did order the POR15 starter kit, so sooner than later i'll wire brush it and treat it w/ the rust treatment.

Neutralize the acid residue with a mixture of baking soda and water. Pour it on let it "fizz" and then pour some more on it, as a temporary "fix" then spray WD40 on it until you can properly remove it

Rust is cancer..

that's the main reason why I removed the boot carpet, so that I can keep an eye on any eventual leak/problem...

Many of the new 'gel filled' style batteries like Bosch and Yuasa produce are sealed for life and can't be topped up. So these don't have a vent to connect the tube to. Any battery you buy where there are removable caps that you can top up with deionzed water should have a vent to push the tube on to.

Hi

I had some rust under the battery on the floor of my 993. I wire brushed the area and sprayed some Valvoline Tectyl ML into the ribbing and sprayed Valvoline Tectyl Bodysafe on the surface. It cures to a waxy finish and will stop the rust. You can also get it off easily for inspection.

The problem with rust killers/converters is that the rust will come back underneath the converted surface.

Any update here? I have not moved forward w/ the rust treatment on mine (pictured above).

Should I drill holes in the battery plate to get the rust killer between the front tub and the battery plate?
