Hi guys,

I'm closing in on a C2 Tiptronic purchase and the PPI revealed a alternator in need of repair. I see with a core exchange at Pelican they are $258 for a rebuilt one. Are their local alternator repair shops that can handle a 964 alternator. Anything exotic about it. I would need this in the Seattle area.

Is there anything exotic? Not that I can see. It looks like a standard alternator. I would take yours to a local shop and ask them if they can rebuild it. My guess is they will say yes.

I got mine rebuilt locally for ~$150; pretty much plane jane.

Although they look a little different they are basically the same as most and easy to rebuild. I rebuilt mine last week with new bearings, shaved down armature a little and new regulator brush combination. Works perfect for a total cost of $51.00.

So this is an easy DIY project to remove the alternator? Debating whether to pay some shop$$ to do it or learn even more about my cars.

Its a pretty easy project. Just be sure to have the 10mm triple square tool and also be careful hooking up the wires to the rear of the alternator. Don't do what I did and reverse the two small gauge wires. It can cause a short.

There are three wires, one very heavy and two small ones. Be sure to note which goes where before you disconnect and reconnect.

Interesting, I didn't look into having mine rebuilt and I bought a reman'ed alternator from Bosch. Actually several of them until I got one that actually worked and I think that it even had a stripped screw that I had to re-tap. Their reman quality leaves a lot to be desired.

The alternator bearing (not to be confused with the fan bearing) is what went on mine so be sure and get them replaced too.

I bought the bearings from "Bearingsdirect.com"

Front bearing #6201 2RS for $5.40
Rear bearing #6203 2RS for $7.25

I bought the voltage regulator off Ebay from classiccarsandparts for $29.95 plus $5.95 shipping. I can't remember the name but it wasn't bosch but it was made in Germany

Do alternators fail gradually? Could getting it tested tell me this?

I've currently got mine out of the car. It's at nearly 100k miles. I don't know if it has ever been replaced. I'm wondering if it would be wise to refresh it now.

Alternators wear gradually such as brushes and bearings. They are a pain to take in and out so while you have it out you should check it or have it checked by a rebuild shop. There seems to be one near by to most. One indicator of wear are the brushes. On the back of the alternator you will see the voltage regulator held in by 2 screws. Remove it and inspect the brushes for wear. Bearing could be starting to go but its had to tell sometimes without disasemble.
